The Field Technician supports the operation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and documentation of water and wastewater systems serviced by PEAK Water Services. Responsibilities may include assisting with public water and wastewater treatment systems, lift and pump stations, distribution and collection systems, residential and commercial treatment units, control panels, valves, hydrants, meters, sampling, inspections, cleaning, utility locates, and emergency response.
Level 3 is an experienced technician/operator capable of advanced troubleshooting, independent system operation, field leadership, training, emergency response, customer communication, and project support. The role participates in the on-call rotation and may respond to after-hours calls, alarms, emergencies, and customer needs as assigned. This position requires travel within a three-hour radius of Helena, MT, Monday through Friday.
- Independently operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain assigned systems.
- Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, process, and control issues.
- Lead service calls, repairs, startups, emergency responses, and technical troubleshooting.
- Train and mentor Level 1 and Level 2 employees.
- Recommend repairs, upgrades, process changes, and corrective actions.
- Coordinate with customers, engineers, contractors, labs, suppliers, and PEAK management.
- Support compliance reporting, sampling schedules, logs, and regulatory documentation as assigned.
- Assist with scoping, planning, and pricing repair or maintenance work.
- Identify system risks, safety issues, contract inefficiencies, and needed follow-up work.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond when assigned.
- Ability to ork independently on complex field assignments.
- Ability to troubleshoot from symptoms to likely root cause.
- Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Experience leading small crews safely and efficiently.
- Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to non-technical customers.
- Know when to proceed, stop, or escalate.
- Ability to produce clear documentation suitable for internal, customer, and regulatory use.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move tools, pumps, hoses, parts, lids, and equipment up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work around odors, wastewater, chemicals, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, confined areas, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to use a phone, tablet, or computer for photos, notes, timekeeping, reports, and communication.
- Ability to follow PEAK policies, safety procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers, customers, and supervisors.
- Ability and willingness to participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours calls, alarms, and emergencies.
- Montana water and/or wastewater operator certifications appropriate to assigned systems.
- Backflow certification, pump training, electrical training, controls training, or manufacturer training preferred.
