Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of work experience in radiation safety or laser safety management.
Meet the radiation safety officers' requirement listed under MISS. CODE ANN. §45-14-11 RULE 1.7.19 in the Mississippi regulations for control of radiation.
Must be board certified by an approved specialty board or must have 200 hours of classroom and laboratory training in radiation physics and instrumentation, radiation protection training, mathematics pertaining to the use and measurement of radioactivity, radiation biology, and radiation dosimetry. LIA approved 40-hour course of education and training.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies, and procedures. Skill in accident/incident investigation and reporting protocols. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to train, motivate, and supervise employees.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Establishes, maintains, and ensures adherence to policies and procedures related to acquiring, handling, storage and disposal of radioactive material and laser safety.
- →Performs checks and calibrates survey instruments and other safety equipment.
- →Trains personnel working or frequenting radioactive material storage areas and others appropriate to radiation / laser safety.
- →Maintain records and reports required by regulatory agencies, each licensing request and license amendments, and written policies required under pertinent regulations.
- →Oversees the investigation of radiation or laser over-exposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposal, mis-administrations, and other deviations from approved radiation or laser safety practice and implements corrective actions as necessary.
- →Attends meetings of and assists the radiation/laser safety committee in the performance of their duties.
- →Evaluates and determines control measures. Supervises as needed healthcare personnel in laser use areas. Investigates and reports incidents, accidents, malfunctions, and/or injuries.
- →Establishes a classification and registration for all laser equipment; monitors the installation and maintenance of such equipment on a periodic basis. Develops and maintains a list of authorized users and departmental laser safety managers. Designates and audits protective equipment for the safe use of laser equipment, supervises the conduct of annual safety audits, and documents results.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, constant driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, constant reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
