Compensation: $22.85 - $28.57 an hour, DOE 

Job Summary

The Compost Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the composting system for Fertilizer production. This role involves managing the composting process, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies. The Operator plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal environmental conditions in and around the compost site and supporting the organization's manure management plan.

Essential Job Functions

• Operate and maintain composting rows
• Ability to operate front end loaders and compost row turner
• Schedule and manage composting cycles, maintaining optimal temperatures (135°F)
• Service, maintain, and disinfect composting equipment between farm uses
• Spread sawdust and manage other composting materials as needed
• Monitor and maintain ammonia (NH3) levels, ensuring that compost is finished properly in accordance with strict guidelines
• Comply with FDA, USDA regulations, and company policies including biosecurity,good Manufacturing Practices, and quality control measures.
• Coordinate with the Manure Management Plan for proper loadouts
• Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on composting equipment
• Keep accurate records of composting activities and equipment maintenance
• Collaborate with farm management to optimize composting processes

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver's license for fuel transportation
• 1 year of experience operating heavy machinery
• Ability to speak English; bilingual skills preferred
• Physical capability to perform required tasks in various environmental conditions
• Basic understanding of biosecurity principles in agricultural settings

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in composting or waste management in agricultural settings
• Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
• Knowledge of environmental regulations related to composting and manure management
• Familiarity with poultry farm operations

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in and around layer barns and composting facilities. The

role involves exposure to various environmental conditions, including dust, odors, and potentially extreme temperatures. Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting, and operating machinery. The Compost Operator must be comfortable working around heavy equipment and in agricultural settings. Some flexibility in working hours may be necessary to maintain optimal composting cycles.
