Certified Pre-Apprenticeship Instructor

The WRTP | BIG STEP Certified Pre-Apprentice Instructor is responsible for transforming lives by teaching, mentoring, being a role model, and guiding participant learning by providing a dynamic, innovative, and positive learning environment.  This position is adept at training and instructing in a variety of areas including the National Building Trade's Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3), OSHA 30, CPR, tool recognition, blueprint reading, construction math, and hands-on skilled training.  The Certified Pre-Apprentice Instructor works closely with WRTP | BIG STEP region directors and managers to fill their instruction needs by planning the training curriculum, ordering instructional supplies, and scheduling the instructors.

• 85% of time will be dedicated to instructing classes in the National Building Trades' Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3), OSHA 30, CPR, tool identification and recognition, blueprint reading, construction mathematics, and hands-on skilled trades training (approximately 34 hours per week).
• 10% of time will be spent on lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom preparation, and related instructional activities (approximately 5 hours per week).
• 5% of time will be devoted to supporting management and the Program Coordination Team in the assessment, planning, continuous improvement, and execution of the service delivery model, including participation in program evaluation and enhancement efforts (approximately 1 hour per week).

Instruction

• →Responsible for instructing adult and youth candidates interested in entering construction trade apprenticeships in the areas of building trade curriculum (hands-on).
• →Provide an introduction to worksite behavior, readiness and safety (jobsite setting, material handling, physical stamina required for construction.
• →Present subject matter using various teaching methods and technology to adapt to varied learning styles.
• →Instruct and monitor students individually and in groups in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injury and damage by using a variety of methods including lecture, demonstration, and hands-on learning.
• →Prepare materials for activities and collaborate with other instructors on educational experience.
• →Provide CPR training.
• →Lead OSHA 10/30 instruction.
• →Offer instruction and facilitate hands-on skill development for the entirety of the MC3 Curriculum including the following units:

• →Construction Industry Awareness
• →Labor History
• →Maintaining a Respectful Workplace
• →Construction Health and Safety (including OSHA and First Aid/CPR)
• →Tool & Material Knowledge, Identification, and Safe Usage
• →Construction Math
• →Blueprint Reading
• →Green Construction Principles

Training and Instruction Oversight

• →Update lesson plans and create new learning and skill development opportunities to keep up with changes in the industry.
• →Safely maintain and oversee use of equipment.
• →Ability to instruct in a manner that encourages engagement and transfer of learning to hands-on activities.
• →Enforce rules and procedures for students and emphasize the importance of safety in all aspects of learning.
• →Assist in planning and supervising class projects.
• →Represent WRTP | BIG STEP, members, and partners in a professional manner at all times.

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the construction industry, building trades, or a related field.
• Preferred: Journey worker credential, completion of a union apprenticeship, relevant certificate or degree, or additional journey-level experience in the building trades.
• Prior Union apprenticeship/construction instruction desired with demonstrated expertise in the construction industry.
• Train the Trainer in MC3 Curriculum, OSHA 30, and CPR or have the ability to complete within first month of employment.
• Knowledge of multiple building trades competencies, tools, and equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office, and ability to learn new systems.
• The ability to work comfortably with a diverse clientele, in both group and individual settings, preferably with experience supporting adults entering into employment and meeting career goals.
• The ability to establish rapport and relate sensitively to a multiracial and multicultural group of customers.
• The ability to pass a background check.
• Flexible scheduling: most work will be performed between 8 – 5 but may require occasional evenings and weekends.
• Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail oriented.
• Must be able to travel independently and reliably to assigned work locations, training sites, and meetings. Employees who operate a vehicle for business purposes must possess a valid driver's license and maintain vehicle insurance in accordance with state requirements.
• Welding experience/instruction is a plus.
