Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationship and team building.

  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of patient laboratory test results. Performs procedures efficiently and as indicated in the procedure manual with minimal supervision and within the required turn-around-time without compromising quality. Responds to STATs immediately. Follows workflow processes according to documented procedures. Documents and communications are reviewed in a timely manner and are appropriately referenced and applied.

  • Ensures quality of test results by following defined Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures. Follows QC procedures and evaluates QC results prior to reporting patient results. Test results are reviewed for accuracy and are promptly reported in the LIS. Demonstrates the ability to perform and accurately document all procedures related to critical values, technical limit failures and QA activities. Demonstrates the ability to recognize a test or reporting system problem, troubleshoot and resolve if possible, seeking advice and escalating as needed. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.

  • Ensures safety and compliance: Patients are accurately identified using two appropriate patient identifiers prior to sample collection. Patient samples are accurately labeled and identified throughout the testing process from sample collection through testing and storage. Misidentified samples are identified and responded to appropriately, notifying all appropriate staff. Results are reported for the correct specimen. Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.

  • Maintains appropriate education to accomplish work objectives and maintain current certifications as applicable. Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth by seeking out learning opportunities available within the department, organization, and community to increase knowledge and education. Minimum of 4 hours of continuing education/year required in addition to annual in-service requirements.

  • Ensures productive and efficient operations of the section and department. Coordinates activities and effectively communicates with others within and outside of lab section to accomplish work objectives through positive and professional interactions contributing to collegiality, teamwork and overall section productivity. Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and performs work without allowing personal situation/perspectives to compromise lab operations. Adjusts schedule to meet changes in workload or at the direction of the manager.

  • Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients.

  • Exposed to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease.

  • Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection).

  • Exposed to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment.

  • May be exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens.

  • May be exposed to toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals and gases.

  • Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment.

  • Moderate noise environment.

  • Subject to injury from sharps.

  • May require judgment/action which could result in death of patient.

  • Subject to many interruptions

  • Occasionally subject to irregular hours.

  • Subject to stressful situations.
