Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor new CDL drivers on safe tanker operations (chemical & petroleum)
  • Conduct ride-alongs and on-the-road evaluations
  • Instruct proper loading/unloading procedures, including pumps, hoses, and valves
  • Reinforce hazmat handling, spill response, and PPE protocols
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and customer-specific requirements
  • Evaluate driver readiness and provide clear pass/fail recommendations
  • Coach drivers on defensive driving, situational awareness, and risk mitigation
  • Assist with refresher training and remediation for current drivers when needed
  • Maintain accurate training documentation and evaluations
  • Communicate closely with Safety and Operations teams
  • Part-time, flexible schedule based on training needs
  • Mix of local and regional travel for ride-alongs
  • Ideal for experienced drivers looking to step into a mentorship role

Requirements

  • Valid Class A CDL with X Endorsement (Hazmat & Tanker)
  • 5+ years of chemical or liquid tanker experience (preferred for trainer role)
  • Strong safety record and clean MVR
  • Prior driver training or mentorship experience strongly preferred
  • Deep understanding of:
    • Bulk liquid surge and handling
    • Chemical compatibility & safety procedures
    • Loading/unloading at plants and terminals
    • Strong communication and coaching ability (this is not just driving—it’s teaching)
    • Ability to evaluate drivers objectively and enforce standards
  • A leader in safety, not just compliance
  • Someone drivers respect and learn from
  • Calm, patient, and detail-oriented under pressure
  • Takes pride in developing the next generation of professional tanker drivers
