Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer

Job Description:

Anaergia is a global technology leader in recovering value from organic waste streams, delivering renewable energy, nutrients, clean water and recyclable products across the municipal, industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors. With headquarters in Burlington, Ontario and regional offices throughout Europe, North America and Asia, Anaergia’s technologies have been deployed in over 1,600 biogas and anaerobic digestion facilities worldwide.

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer will establish and lead the company’s CFD modeling capabilities to support the development, optimization and validation of Anaergia’s core technologies. Working from concept modeling through to product deployment, the CFD Engineer will analyze multiphase fluid systems, interpret simulation results, develop design recommendations, and contribute to the engineering of next-generation equipment for the solid waste, wastewater, and renewable energy sectors.

The CFD Engineer will apply practical CFD methods to improve Anaergia’s anaerobic digester mixing designs, with emphasis on submersible mixer applications and pump/hydraulic mixing configurations. The role will translate simulation results into actionable design recommendations for mixer selection, tank geometry, nozzle or pump recirculation arrangements, operating strategies, and retrofit improvements. The position is intended for an engineer with relevant experience who can independently execute well-defined CFD studies while growing into broader ownership of Anaergia’s internal CFD methods and tools.

Responsibilities:

CFD Modeling & Mechanical Engineering

  • Develop CFD models of complex single-phase and multi-phase flow systems anaerobic digester mixing systems.
  • Apply boundary conditions, meshing strategies, turbulence models, and solver methods.
  • Interpret CFD outputs to generate actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Use simulations to improve equipment performance and inform design decisions.
  • Assist Anaergia’s Product Development Teams in assisting with developing conceptual mechanical designs for improvement of existing manufacturable products and development of new products using 3D CAD software.
  • Assist with development of Anaergia’s internal CFD analysis toolkit for complex biogas, wastewater, and organics processing systems.
  • Develop reusable model templates, meshing standards, solver set-ups, quality checks, validation protocols, and post-processing routines to improve repeatability and efficiency.
  • Automate recurring pre-processing and post-processing tasks using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools where practical.
  • Benchmark CFD predictions against laboratory, pilot-scale, commissioning, and field operating data, and document model limitations and confidence levels.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with product managers, researchers, and project engineers.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and Global engineering teams.
  • Support development of O&M documentation for integrated systems.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, specification sheets, and performance guarantee documents.
  • Contribute to internal CFD standards and best practices.
  • Prepare clear internal reports, design notes, visualizations, and technical presentations that communicate assumptions, results, risks, and recommended actions.
  • Participate in commissioning activities for mixer performance validation and assist operations teams in evaluating mixing problems with existing digesters.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; Master’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Approximately 2-5 years of relevant experience using CFD for industrial fluid systems, wastewater/biogas systems, mixing systems, turbomachinery, pumps, or related applications.
  • Working knowledge of CFD model development, geometry preparation, meshing, boundary condition selection, turbulence modeling, solver set-up, convergence assessment, and post-processing.
  • Experience with commercial or open-source CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent/CFX, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, COMSOL, or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret CFD results and translate them into practical engineering recommendations for equipment design or process performance improvement.
  • Competence with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar for geometry review and model preparation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports and explain modeling assumptions to project stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, document work clearly, and work effectively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Preferred experience with one or more of the following areas: anaerobic digestion, sludge handling, wastewater treatment, biogas systems, organic waste processing, or renewable natural gas facilities.
  • Hands-on experience with mixing systems, submersible mixers, pump recirculation, jet mixing, impellers, or rotating machinery is preferred.
  • Knowledge of non-Newtonian fluids, multiphase flow, solids suspension, rheology testing, tracer testing, or field validation of mixing performance.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, visualization, or CFD workflow development.

Key Personal Attributes

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude to get things done.
  • Passionate, highly driven, and hard-working, portrays an Entrepreneurial spirit, a great team player and gets things done. Has the ability to self-start tasks without dropping the ball waiting for responses from others. Inquisitive, solutions oriented. “Can do” attitude
  • Always reading on new technologies, technically deep and detail oriented.
  • Team player, humble. Meets promises internally and to external clients and project stakeholders and participants
  • Aligned and motivated by our company Mission.
