The Urgent Care Tech provides direct clinical support and patient care in the Urgent Care setting under the direction of the provider. This role supports patient intake, clinical procedures, specimen collection, waived testing, medication administration as permitted by Augusta Health policy, and assistance with urgent and emergent patient care needs in a fast-paced ambulatory environment.

The Urgent Care Tech helps maintain patient flow, supports provider efficiency, and promotes a safe, prepared clinical environment for both routine and unexpected patient care needs.

This role functions under provider direction and Augusta Medical Group (AMG) ambulatory clinic practice standards and does not operate under independent Commonwealth of Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) field protocols.

Requirements

  • Current Virginia EMT-Advanced (AEMT) certification required.
  • CPR certification required
  • NREMT-Advanced preferred
  • ACLS preferred
  • Prior EMT, urgent care, emergency department, or ambulatory clinical experience preferred
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, unpredictable clinical environment
  • Strong clinical assessment and patient care support skills
  • Effective communication with patients, families, and care team
  • Ability to follow provider direction and clinical protocols
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and safety
  • Demonstrates adaptability, initiative, and critical thinking
  • Computer proficiency with the ability to accurately document in the electronic medical record (EMR) and navigate standard business systems such as Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work flexible hours based on clinic and operational needs
  • Ability to meet physical and mental demands of the role

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Performs patient intake, including vital signs, medical history collection, and documentation.
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
  • Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  • Provides direct patient care within scope, training, and competency validation.
  • Observes, documents, and reports patient condition and changes to provider.
  • Supports urgent and emergent patient care situations as they arise.
  • Maintains patient safety and dignity at all times.

Clinical Procedures & Testing

  • Performs approved clinical procedures independently upon completion of competency validation.
  • Provides pre- and post-procedural care to patients including medication administration, local lab tests, venipuncture, EKGs and assessment of patient’s status.
  • Collects, labels, and prepares specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Performs waived testing in accordance with Augusta Health policies.
  • Performs EKGs and other diagnostic support functions as assigned.
  • Assists with wound care, splinting, and other minor procedures.

Medication Administration & Advanced Clinical Functions

(All items below require provider order, competency validation, and alignment with Augusta Health policy).

  • Administers medications as directed by provider and within approved scope, completed competency validation, and Augusta Medical Group practice standards and policy.
  • Intramuscular (IM) injections
  • Subcutaneous injections
  • Nebulizer treatments and medication administration
  • Initiation of intravenous (IV) access
  • Administration of IV fluids
  • Access to and administration from clinic medication stock or secured medication storage.

Coordination & Workflow Support

  • Assists with patient flow, rooming, and throughput to support efficient clinic operations.
  • Maintains exam rooms and clinical areas in a clean, stocked, and ready state.
  • Supports routine clinic operations by assisting with maintaining appropriate medical supply inventory, stocking exam rooms, answering telephones, and performing other operational duties necessary to ensure efficient daily workflow.
  • Monitors inventory and communicates supply needs.

Documentation & Communication

  • Accurately documents all patient care activities in the medical record.
  • Communicates effectively with providers, team members, and patients.
  • Ensures timely and complete documentation in accordance with organizational standards.

General Responsibilities

  • Participates in required training, competency validation, and continuing education.
  • Attends staff meetings and contributes to team-based care environment.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support clinic operations.
