Sr. Software Development Engineer - Workday & Enterprise Systems

This role exists to support and scale Avalara's Workday development and enterprise system integrations at a time of increasing demand, growing backlog, and critical initiative delivery. Following recent attrition, this position is essential to ensure continuity, delivery velocity, system reliability, and sustainable engineering execution across Workday and related enterprise platforms.

The Sr. Software Engineer will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering outcomes across Workday development, integrations, automation, and enterprise system initiatives.

• →Own and deliver Workday development, integrations, enhancements, and related engineering work with a focus on reliability, scalability, maintainability, and business impact.
• →Contribute to high-priority engineering initiatives including AvaTax development, ELR readiness through planned SRR/ARB work, AP cutover support for Canada and the USA, and automation testing for new and existing features.
• →Reduce backlog by delivering high-impact engineering work with strong prioritization, execution discipline, and ownership from requirements through production support.
• →Improve system performance, stability, observability, and maintainability across Workday and related enterprise platforms.
• →Build and improve automation capabilities to reduce manual effort, improve testing coverage, accelerate delivery, and reduce operational risk.
• →Collaborate cross-functionally with product, finance, tax technology, PM, EIE, and engineering stakeholders to deliver business-critical outcomes.
• →Support the engineering Confluence overhaul by improving documentation quality, standardizing knowledge repositories, and reducing dependency on tribal knowledge.
• →Participate in code reviews, design discussions, testing strategy, release readiness, and operational support activities to ensure high-quality delivery.
• →Identify opportunities to simplify complex workflows, improve engineering processes, and increase team productivity through better tooling, automation, and AI-assisted development practices.

• →Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues, leveraging strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• →Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation, and knowledge sharing across the engineering organization.
• →Participate actively in Agile development processes, including planning, estimation, and retrospectives.
• →Drive innovation by identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes, and developer productivity.
• →Mentor and support other engineers while fostering a collaborative and inclusive engineering culture.

Success in the first 12 months will be measured by the candidate's ability to deliver measurable engineering, operational, and business outcomes.

• Reduced backlog across Workday development and related enterprise system work through consistent delivery of high-priority engineering items.
• Improved cycle time and execution predictability for Workday enhancements, integrations, automation testing, and related development work.
• Supported successful delivery of key initiatives including AvaTax development, ELR readiness through planned SRR/ARB work, AP cutover support for Canada and the USA, and other roadmap commitments.
• Improved system reliability, maintainability, and supportability through better design, cleaner implementation, improved testing, and stronger operational practices.
• Increased automation coverage and reduced manual effort in development, testing, release, or support workflows.
• Contributed to a more complete, accurate, and usable engineering Confluence knowledge base that improves onboarding, supportability, and team execution.
• Reduced dependency bottlenecks by taking ownership of core areas and sharing knowledge effectively with peers.
• Demonstrated strong judgment in technical tradeoffs involving speed, reliability, maintainability, scalability, and operational risk.
• Applied AI tools in practical ways that improved speed, quality, documentation, testing, or engineering productivity.

• Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, test creation, documentation, and integration analysis.
• Apply AI to improve quality and speed in Workday development, automation testing, API/integration work, and troubleshooting.
• Use AI to support better documentation practices, including summarizing technical decisions, improving Confluence content, and making knowledge easier to discover and maintain.
• Identify opportunities where AI can reduce repetitive manual effort, improve developer productivity, strengthen testing, or improve operational insight.
• Quantify the impact of AI usage where practical, such as time saved, faster delivery, reduced defects, improved documentation quality, or improved support efficiency.
• Apply AI responsibly and securely, especially when working with enterprise systems, business processes, integrations, and potentially sensitive operational data.
• Share effective AI practices with the team and help raise the overall AI capability of peers through examples, documentation, and knowledge sharing.

This role is expected to demonstrate applied AI capability that improves speed, quality, insight, automation, and scale - not just casual or occasional tool usage.

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field;
• Experience: 6+ years in software development and architecture, with demonstrated expertise in building large-scale, distributed systems for enterprise environments;
• Proven experience as a Tech Lead, providing technical leadership to a team.
• Experience with Workday development, Workday integrations, or enterprise system development.
• Strong proficiency in backend development, APIs, integration patterns, automation testing, and system design.
• Experience delivering production-quality software in Agile environments with ownership across design, development, testing, release, and support.
• Soft Skills: Experience approaching a problem from different angles, analyzing pros and cons of different solutions; Experience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners, and an approach to driving innovation;
• Vision: Experience creating impactful software solutions and experience driving product excellence and adoption;
• English Fluency: Fluent English is a requirement for this role.
• Experience applying AI tools in engineering workflows to improve development speed, documentation quality, testing efficiency, or operational effectiveness.
