Maritime Naval Ships are pleased to announce this progression opportunity Principal Mechanical Engineer – Power and Propulsion. This role sits within the Engineering Function.

The Principal Mechanical Engineer role specializes in Power & Propulsion and is part of a team heavily involved in the construction of naval ships for the Royal Navy. The delivery of the propulsion system on T26 is pivotal to the overall programme, ensuring the customer is provided with a quality product that meets all requirements and expectations.

The role will involve delivering specialist mechanical engineering expertise to organise and co-ordinate significant aspects of the power and propulsion design, installation and testing on T26 to ensure defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and cost. The role requires a regular presence on the ship to support the build programme, and involves managing technical contract packages, resolving emergent issues, and providing support to export contracts, contributing to a small, specialised department with minimal turnover

Responsibilities

·       Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.

·       Utilise principles of Shaft Alignment to lead and support alignment and installation of propulsion equipment on a multi-ship programme to the correct tolerances and requirements.

·       Prepare technical specification documents and develop designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards.

·       Support the Engineering Manager as a point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.

·       Represent P&P Engineering at stakeholder sessions and regular Daily Stand Ups for ship build to provide technical expertise and status updates on Engineering responsibilities supporting propulsion installation.

·       Support development of detailed build plans as the equipment lead to identify opportunities and risks in the implementation of the activities. Engage with senior leadership to manage these appropriately to resolution.

·       Assist with the secondary management of the P&P team; develop personal knowledge and experience and assist and develop other team members and provide guidance and support to others.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in an engineering or other related discipline (or other qualifications plus appropriate further learning)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or IEng working towards CEng
  • Experience in mechanical or marine system design and/or integration
  • Technical knowledge of Power & propulsion systems, including (but not limited to):
    • Prime movers and power generation
    • Shafting, bearings and couplings
    • Gearboxes
    • Fuel and supporting systems
    • Integration into ship control systems
  • Knowledge of the engineering lifecycle and the interdependencies between lifecycle phases
  • Capability to resolve complex technical and interface issues through collaboration and negotiation

Desirable:

  • Has worked in multiple phases of the lifecycle in the defence/maritime industry.
  • Can work with significant autonomy and can perform complex analysis/deliver complex solutions in more than one sub discipline. Has proven to deliver a variety of work scopes.
  • Has prior experience of working as a senior engineer and proven experience working at CEng level.
  • Strong people management skills and leadership experience in a multi-disciplined engineering environment.
  • Prepared and formally checked technical documentation, calculations and drawings in line with appropriate standards.
