Responsibilities
~3 min read- →Conduct phase one archaeological surveys including pedestrian surveys and shovel testing to identify presence or absence of cultural resources.
- →Assist with excavation and trenching activities as needed, primarily in Texas and surrounding regions (possibly Oklahoma).
- →Collect and document field data using tablets, GPS devices, and maintain detailed photo logs.
- →Support preparation of reports, background research, and site documentation for archaeological projects.
- →Collaborate with project leads and team members to ensure accurate data collection and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- →Participate in fieldwork under the guidance of experienced crew chiefs, with opportunities for mentorship and skill development.
- →Communicate findings and technical information clearly to project managers and team members.
- →Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry; GIS experience is a plus.
- →Adhere to safety protocols and carry out fieldwork in various weather conditions, often requiring travel within North Texas and occasionally to other states.
Job Requirements
- →Career focus on cultural resources fieldwork in archaeological surveys or related environmental studies.
- →Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology; upperclassmen nearing graduation with relevant field school experience will also be considered.
- →Solid organizational skills and proficiency in technical data entry and report documentation.
- →Effective time-management, written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- →Professional presence with the ability to make sound decisions in field and office settings.
- →Ability to work effectively in team environments and establish strong working relationships across project teams.
- →Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable using tablets and GPS technology for field data collection; GIS experience is a plus.
- →Must be able to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- →Knowledge of archaeological field methods such as pedestrian survey, shovel testing, and trenching preferred.
- →Willingness to travel locally within North Texas and occasionally to other project sites in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Kansas.
- →Ability to record field data accurately with minimal assistance from other employees and use time management effectively.
- →Ability to travel and perform daily fieldwork for extended periods (crews typically work 10-hour days during field efforts, except for travel days).
- →Ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions (including cold, heat, humidity, light rain, or snow).
- →Ability to navigate rugged terrain and perform shovel tests at set intervals up to 10 miles per day while carrying field equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
- →CPR, First Aid, and Wilderness First Aid certifications are preferred.
- →A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation are required.
- →Passing a drug screening test and driver record check is mandatory upon acceptance of an offer.
