The Director of Student and Community Engagement provides the strategic vision necessary to integrate a student's academic path with a meaningful life outside the classroom. Overseeing essential areas such as student government, fraternity and sorority life, and university-wide transition programs, the Director ensures that every initiative reinforces a student-ready culture where students are known, supported, and challenged. This leadership role focuses on the holistic development of students, guiding them through a process of self-discovery and ethical growth that aligns with the university's commitment to preparing graduates for a lifetime of purposeful leadership. As a senior leader within the Student Experience division, the Director aligns departmental priorities with the strategic plan to deliver a distinctive, integrated student experience.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide departmental leadership for the office of Student and Community Engagement (SCE). This includes, but is not limited to, support of professional and student staff, setting strategic priorities, and participating in division leadership. Functional areas supported through the SCE include: Fraternity and Sorority Life, Orientation and Transition programming, Student Government, Student Organizations, Campus Activities, and Student Union.
  • Campus lead on all aspects of Transitions Programming, including but not limited to: Summer Orientation, Cap101, Welcome Weekend, Transfer Celebration Week, First Generation Student Celebration, and Winter Welcome; Recruit and train Student Leadership Team and Orientation Leader Team. Chair institutional Orientation and Transitions Working Group.
  • Advise thirteen Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) organizations and their governing councils (Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Association (PHA) and National Pan-Hellenic Conference City-wide Chapters. Provide guidance to individual FSL organizations on program-planning, recruitment, new member education, and continuous education to ensure that FSL organizations meet the minimum standards established by the University. Ensure compliance with all University and international and national organization policies, procedures regulating FSL and its programming.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Undergraduate Student Government.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive leadership development program, which supports all of levels of student leadership including emerging leaders programs, the Annual Student Leadership Conference and new initiatives which enhance these existing programs. Coordinate AIM workshop series and certificates; Coordinate Annual Student Leadership Awards and co-coordinate Distinguished Senior Leader Awards with Alumni Relations.
  • Develop and implement a holistic social media and marketing plan for the Office of Student and Community Engagement. Supervise SCE PR intern.
  • Participate as a member of institutional student success committee.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (M. A.) required; three to five years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding, experience and knowledge with fraternity and sorority life is preferred.
  • One to three years of full-time staff supervision is preferred.
  • Ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. Possesses a positive attitude towards cultural differences. Willing to gain knowledge of different cultural practices and world views and determine how those practices and views will factor in during investigations, complaints, reports, findings, etc.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the Microsoft suite of products, inDesign, Canva, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to effectively present information to a wide range of constituents. Ability to facilitate discussion groups and workshops; ability to coordinate events; ability to update and maintain social media presence and organizational listservs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • This position requires the ability and/or skill to: work closely and professionally with others as part of a team, be flexible, pay attention to detail, work without supervision and demonstrate considerable initiative, communicate professionally through both verbal and written means, work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds, manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines, establish departmental goals and priorities, contribute to Capital University's mission and vision.
