Performs Patient Care Activities as delegated by the Nurse and/or Physician for patients of all age's groups with both acute and chronic health problems. The Licensed Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG tracings and assisting with O2 needs.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission by:PARTICIPATION:in cost containmentdevelopment/maintenance of positive work environmentminimizing overtimeattending required classes and meetingsparticipating in unit committeesadheres to all policies and proceduresPROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY:applies protective devices correctlyanticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimumassists RN in planning patient caremaintains a safe unit environmentPROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL:washes hands before and after patient contacthandles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocolmaintains sterile asepsischanges and secures dressingsmaintains isolation techniquePROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY:utilizes p.p.e. appropriatelykeeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one sidePROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses station, utility rooms) clean/stockedrestocks equipment in patient roomsaccountable for wheelchairs, thermometers, pulse oximeters, glucometers and other pertinent equipmentcompletes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from serviceProvides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values. Evidenced by:PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED:oxygen therapy including pulse oximetry, oral and nasal airways insertion oral suctioning and placement of 02 per cannula and non-rebreather maskFoley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infantsperforms and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recordingperforms lab testing as appropriateprovides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusionPerforms splint application (Methodist only)Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY:temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN)Pulse - apical and radial,Blood pressure,height and weight,intake and output,pain ratingsDemonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions. Performs and documents special procedures per policy:application of heat/colddecubitus carepelvic exam setupI & D setupsurgical skin prepapply ace/TEDS/bindersapply/remove leadsassist coughing & deep breathingassist with physical examoral suctioningnasopharyngeal suctioningmaintain and clean suction equipmentapplication of hypo/hyperthermia unitcare of oxygen equipment.room set-up for traumasuture set-upmoderate sedation set-uppatient prep for any procedureDemonstrates a practical problem solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment.Performs direct patient care that significantly impacts patient satisfaction evidenced by:PROMOTION OF PATIENT WELLNESS:maintain a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and unclutteredready to monitor patient post-procedureparticipates in admission, transport and discharge of patientsassist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfortASSIST PATIENTS WITH NUTRITION MANAGEMENT:prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrivesdelivers traysdocuments intake per policyfeeds dependent patients as neededprovides fresh water, ice and snacks.PROVIDES ASSISTANCE WITH ELIMINATION PROCEDURES:offers/removes bedpans and urinalsprovides catheter care per policyremoves foley cathetersApplies external urinary cathetersempty urinary drainage bags using goggles and glovescollect specimens for ordered testscatheterize female and male patientscommunicates any intake and output .

The compensation range for this position is $17.89per hour - $28.98per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
