About the Role

The Finance Organization of the Crum & Forster Accident & Health Division is looking for an experienced multi-talented individual to join the team.  This individual will be responsible for the oversight and leadership of financial reporting, accounting operations, financial governance, controls, and statutory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily accounting operations of the organization
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process
  • Prepare and review internal financial statements
  • Premium and Revenue Accounting
    • Oversee accounting for: Written premium, Earned premium, Policy fees and commissions, Premium receivables
    • Ensure premiums are recorded accurately by: Policy period, Product line, State or jurisdiction, Distribution channel
  • Loss and Reserve Accounting
    • Coordinate accounting for: Paid losses, Case reserves, Incurred but not reported reserves, Loss adjustment expenses
    • Work with actuarial, claims, and finance teams to:: Validate reserve-related financial entries, Review reserve movements
  • Reinsurance Accounting
    • Oversee ceded and assumed reinsurance accounting, where applicable
    • Ensure proper recording of: Reinsurance recoverables. Ceded premiums, Commissions, Loss recoveries, Funds held balances
    • Reconcile treaty and facultative activity with reinsurers and brokers
    • Monitor collectability and aging of reinsurance balances
  • Regulatory and Statutory Responsibilities
    • Support preparation of statutory financial statements such as Annual, Quarterly, and Supplemental Schedules
    • Ensure compliance with: Statutory accounting principles, IFRS, State insurance department requirements
  • Leadership
  • Train team members on: Accounting policy, Insurance accounting concepts, Controls and documentation standards.
  • Help build a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide the leadership necessary to maintain a motivated, productive and competent team through open communication and delegation of responsibilities and authority.
  • Be a team leader and builder who has an eye for talent with the ability to maximize resources and capability to deliver business results.
  • Demonstrate strong mentoring, relationship building, planning and organizational skills.
  • Guide and direct team members in their personal and professional development. 
  • Drive performance excellence through goal-setting, quality feedback, and performance appraisals within the team (midyear and annual).

  • Drive and role model the A&H culture, values and C&F core competencies within their teams.
  • Internal Controls and Governance
    • Design, maintain, and monitor internal controls over financial reporting
    • Ensure proper segregation of duties and approval workflows
    • Review controls over: Premium accounting, Claims disbursements, Journal entries, Reconciliations, Financial reporting systems
    • Support compliance with internal governance requirements
    • Identify accounting and reporting risks and escalate issues when needed
  • Treasury, Cash, and Operational Oversight
    • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and working capital
    • Oversee bank reconciliations and cash controls
    • Support treasury processes such as: Cash forecasting, Funding needs, Payment controls
    • Review operational accounting impacts tied to: Claims payments, Producer commissions, Reinsurance settlements, Vendor and TPA payments
  • Audit and Examination Support
    • Serve as a key contact for: External financial statement audits, SOX-related work, Internal audit reviews, Insurance department examinations
    • Prepare audit schedules, account analyses, and support documentation
    • Resolve audit questions and help implement remediation plans for control gaps
  • Improve efficiency, standardization, and accuracy in accounting workflows
  • Perform special projects and assignments under the direction of senior leadership
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to establish a good rapport with all customers and business partners

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent; Accounting or Finance Degree required
  • CPA a plus
  • 15+ years working in an accounting/financial role within the insurance space
  • Strong PC skills including Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc.

Crum & Forster is committed to ensuring a workplace free from discriminatory pay disparities and complying with applicable pay equity laws.  Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $172,700.00 to a maximum of $253,200.00. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee’s contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
