The purpose of the cooperative experience is to provide a semester long hands-on experience. Werfen hires students with leadership potential and proven academic success. Ideal candidates will combine technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving abilities. The Process Development Engineering Co-Op will support the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes used to produce high-quality products safely, efficiently, and cost effectively. The co-op will work closely with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to implement process improvements, develop automation solutions, and support new product introductions. The successful candidate will gain experience across multiple engineering disciplines, contributing to work cell design, assembly process improvement, tooling development, inventory management, and test automation projects that drive manufacturing efficiency and product quality. 

Responsibilities

  • Support pilot builds, prototype production, and new product introduction (NPI) efforts. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, Supply Chain, and Operations to implement process improvements. 
  • Develop and maintain process documentation such as work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process flow diagrams. 
  • Participate in equipment qualification, commissioning, and process characterization activities. 
  • Perform time studies, workflow analyses, and capacity assessments to optimize manufacturing operations. 
  • Evaluate new technologies, materials, and automation solutions to enhance manufacturing capability. 
  • Generate technical reports and present findings, recommendations, and project updates to stakeholders. 
  • Development of inventory control and systems for prototype builds. 
  • Contribute to test system design and automation development. 

 

  • Apply programming skills in languages such as Python, LabVIEW, and TestStand for data analysis, automation, or test development. 
  • Solid working knowledge of basic electrical equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power supplies. 
  • Design of tools and aids that improve the assembly and test of manufactured parts using CAD tools such as Creo. 
  • Performs experiments, analyzes and interprets numerical data from experiments.  
  • Summarizes findings by computer readouts, statistical summaries, graphs and other methods. 
  • Requires confidence in using Microsoft Word and Excel tools. 
  • Requires Enthusiasm, motivation, initiative and ability to work within an interactive and energetic workplace. 
  • Review process procedures, change orders, equipment specifications, validation plans, and reports. 
  • Performs market research on relevant topics.  

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent with a minimum of 2 college semesters complete.
  • Ability to multitask.

 

The hourly range for this role is $22/hr to $30/hr. Individual compensation will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience and grade level completed.
