Responsibilities 

  • Manages/develops programs to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards through:

    • Safety-training of all employees 

    • Planned inspections

    • Skill training 

    • First-aid care 

    • Emergency preparedness 

    • New employee and contractor indoctrination

    • Physical protection

    • Planned job observation

    • Rules and practices 

    • Job analysis/procedures 

    • Protective equipment 

     

  • Consistently active within the field providing regular support and guidance to salary and hourly employees to maintain a safe work environment that is consistent with the company’s policies and state/federal regulations 

  • Continually engages salary and hourly employees to ensure the desired safety behaviours are being demonstrated at all levels of the organization 

  • Maintains compliance with governmental regulatory agencies 

  • Assist with root cause analysis for accidents, incidents and near miss events; assist in development and implementation of corrective actions

  • Provides coaching and subject matter expertise to the region’s management and hourly employees in all matters related to health and safety including all potential losses

  • Leads the region in the execution of Carmeuse’s Health & Safety strategy of achieving zero losses 

  • Oversees the regions Health & Safety management system 

  • Drives change by actively being a change agent for the region’s health and safety program 

  • Promotes health & safety continuous improvement culture across cross functional teams 

  • Oversight of processes and programs to ensure regulatory and company compliance 

  • Minimizes losses by leading mitigation efforts including, but not limited to, managing workers compensation claims, property damage and business interruption.

  • Promotes the concepts of operational risk management including property protection 

 

Basic requirements: (Education, Level of Experience, Language)

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Safety Management, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or related subject or equivalent experience and training

  • Professional certification such as Certified Mine Safety Specialist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Safety Professional, is preferred.

  • Minimum five years of progressive health and safety experience, preferably in a mining, manufacturing or construction environment 

  • MSHA experience is desired, with OSHA/DOT experience a strong plus

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities appropriately

  • Fluency in spoken and written English

  • Must be able to support a continuous improvement environment as well as change management initiatives

  • Able to travel 

  • Able to develop and conduct training programs

  • Excellent conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of mine safety and health principles and practices, techniques and procedures, regulations, and standards as they apply to conducting inspections/investigations, identifying and evaluating unsafe conditions, and recommending methods to correct unsafe conditions.

  • Knowledge of people management skills

  • Knowledge of continuous manufacturing business sector

  • Technical creditability as it relates to industry, with a preference on mining and lime kilns

  • Applies conceptual and strategic thinking skills to know and understand the big picture within the context of the wider organization’s strategy 

  • Builds strong interpersonal relationships and understands the region’s employees to help them realize their potential to achieve a safe working environment 

  • Possesses strong coaching skills ensuring the management team and hourly employees are skilled and knowledgeable of the safety management system and processes; and able to recognize performance problems and effectively modify behavior and attitudes 

  • Exhibits the ability to train and facilitate learning to ensure appropriate safety skills, knowledge, and behaviors are instituted throughout the region 

  • Possess the ability to identify events and environmental impact that can adversely affect a task, an initiative, or a program outcome and manage the risk appropriately 

  • Facilitates organizational change initiatives within the region; understands how change affects employees, communicates to reduce fear and confusion with initiatives

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; in outside weather conditions; and is frequently exposed to wet and or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, petroleum products, toxic or caustic chemicals, petroleum products, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
