Carnegie Robotics partners with industry leaders to design, build, and deploy hardened robotic solutions for complex real-world problems. Our work spans floor care, marine systems, logistics, industrial inspection, precision positioning, mining, off-road autonomy, minesweeping, and other challenging applications. Whether you are already passionate about robotics or are looking to find your niche in the field, Carnegie Robotics offers an environment where hands-on builders can grow and make an impact.
We are looking for individuals who are interested in the areas and technologies we work on every day. Experience is valuable, but curiosity, craftsmanship, and a willingness to learn are just as important. Our team includes engineers, technicians, and program leaders from a wide range of backgrounds, and we value people who want to build skills, share knowledge, and contribute across disciplines.
Technicians have opportunities to train on equipment in our machine shop, gain certifications, use CAD tools, and learn directly from engineers and senior technicians while developing their career path.
Responsibilities
~1 min readAs part of the Engineering Technician team, you will assemble, test, troubleshoot, and support electromechanical robotic systems and products. This includes off-road, military, and commercial vehicle platforms; aftermarket autonomy upgrades; custom electronics and enclosures; perception sensors such as stereo cameras and LiDAR; and test fixtures used to validate these systems.
Working alongside engineering to design, develop, install, & troubleshoot prototype systems to meet project requirements. You will have a special emphasis on systems in the early phases of development.
The primary focus of this position is working in the CRL machine shop to fabricate custom design components for installation on various complex systems. This position will be integral to fleet vehicle builds, research and development pilot builds, and test fixture setup.
The machinery you will be using includes manual knee mill and lathe, CNC mill, waterjet, laser cutter, welders (TIG and MIG), powder coating equipment, and a wood shop (outfitted with CNC router).
Your work will be guided by technical drawings and schematics (Altium, EDA, Solidworks, CAD, etc.), not detailed work instructions. During this process you will give critical feedback for design improvements, and develop the first draft of the assembly process.
As a valued member of the team, you will recommend productivity improvements for your day to day processes. You will also be responsible for identifying tooling needs and maintaining these tools.
During system testing and troubleshooting, you will employ traditional test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, software tools, etc.
You will design and build test fixtures and assembly tooling.
You will execute test plans using standard test equipment (temperature chambers, vibration table, etc) and document the results.
As needed, you may be asked to create cable harnesses and assist engineering in completing cable drawings/documentation.

- Ability to lift more than 40 lbs
- 3+ years experience as a mechanic or technician
- Excellent welding skills on both MIG and TIG, and for a variety of materials including steel and aluminum
- You will be genuinely excited to work in an environment where your entry title does not limit your opportunity to contribute, learn and succeed
- You operate well as part of a cross discipline team working towards a goal, not as an individual contributor doing a task
- You have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced engineering/manufacturing environment
- You are willing to travel occasionally to help test and install the product of your labors at customer locations
- UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options
