POSITION TITLE:            Caseworker-Coach I (Participant Support Specialist)

REPORTS TO:                  Program Manager, Rachel's Women's Center (downtown San Diego)

FLSA STATUS:                 Non-Exempt

TIME COMMITMENT:     Full or Part time (40 hours/week total)   

SALARY:                          $21- $22 per hour DOE

POSITION SUMMARY

Rachel's Women's Center (RWC) is a 7-day a week drop-in day center for women who are unhoused. The Participant Support Specialist is an essential member of the RWC team and establishes a welcoming, safe and supportive atmosphere for program participants. This team member plays a vital part in efficient operations and assists women in meeting their basic needs in a dignified, respectful manner. This team member is expected to consistently interact with participants in a trauma-informed, safety focused manner. Motivating, supporting, and guiding the people we serve is a shared responsibility for every member of the team.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Greets and signs in participants; prioritizes their immediate needs and guides them to services.
  • Reviews intakes with new participants, explains RWC daily routine, available services, and behavioral expectations.
  • Develops daily shower list, guides participants to the shower at their scheduled time, provides necessary hygiene supplies and clean clothing.
  • Ensures the front desk area is always attended; answers the telephone and monitors guest and volunteer sign-in logs.
  • Greets donors, accepts donations, prepares receipts, and documents items received.
  • Assists with filing and distributing participants’ mail.
  • Plates participants’ lunch
  • Ensures the program environment is clean and organized.
  • Prepares the facility for opening and stocks supplies for the day.
  • Prepares maintenance work orders as needed.
  • Coaches’ participants in Center upkeep; works cooperatively with team members.
  • Provides participants with resource & referral information as requested; regularly updates resource information.
  • Knows and executes emergency protocols and responds appropriately.
  • Provides conflict resolution/crisis intervention to participants using trauma informed approach.
  • Adheres to Mission, Principles and Policies of Catholic Charities.
  • Provides role model for participants by exhibiting appropriate social behavior
  • Sets firm boundaries with participants while remaining patient and trauma informed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma and a minimum of one year of experience serving people experiencing homelessness or serving people living with substance use disorders and/or mental illness or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn and grow.
  • Well-developed listening skills
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred but not required, must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Understands and demonstrates the ability to apply a trauma-informed approach to service delivery.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to become proficient with database software.
  • Valid Driver’s License and a safe driving record
  • Successful completion of a live scan background clearance
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently.
  • Candidates with lived experience or gender specific women’s services background are encouraged to apply.
  • De-escalation, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Motivational Interviewing and stages of change.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply documents such as policies, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk for up to 8 hours per day with intermittent, occasional standing, bending, squatting, or climbing.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Walking up and down stairs at least 3 times per day is an essential part of this job.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include the ability to see close up.
