Skilled, hands-on, and ready to tackle tough conditions to keep Fort Wayne flowing.

What You'll Do Working under the direction of the Field Operations Supervisor, you'll operate vacuum, jet flusher, and hydro excavation equipment to clean and maintain sewer lines, catch basins, manholes, and inlets. You'll prepare accurate reports, assist with root and grease control, and ensure sewer infrastructure operates safely and efficiently. This role is physically demanding and essential for protecting public health and city infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate vacuum and jet flusher trucks, hydro excavation equipment, and root control devices to maintain sewer systems
  • Prepare daily reports on completed work, repairs needed, and any irregularities observed
  • Perform minor maintenance, clean and maintain trucks and equipment, and work safely with chemicals
  • Oversee and train Field Operator I employees, ensuring proper workflow and safety compliance
  • Collaborate with other City staff to resolve project issues and maintain operational efficiency

Supervisory Responsibilities Oversees and directs the daily workflow of Field Operator I employees; assists in training other Utility staff.

What You Bring | Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: 2 years' experience operating flushing trucks, vacuum trucks, or hydro excavation equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy, strenuous, and physically demanding work
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public

Preferred Certifications

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "B" endorsement (Beginners Permit at hire; regular CDL required within 180 days; tanker "N" endorsement for existing employees)
  • Certified Competent Person: Confined Space (must obtain within 90 days of start date)

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of sewer cleaning equipment, hydro excavation, and related work processes
  • Proficient with work order management and GIS software, Windows/iOS platforms
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and operate in confined spaces using required safety apparatus
