Responsibilities

As part of the Pumping and Transmission team, you will help maintain the infrastructure that ensures Fredericksburg's water systems are efficient, reliable, and robust. Work assignments may include:
Crew Member I

Drainage Maintenance
Involves supporting activities such as cleaning gutters, culverts, and various drainage structures, along with performing basic digging and routine maintenance tasks to ensure proper drainage.

Sewer Maintenance
Responsibilities include aiding in the removal of blockages from sewer mains under supervision and assisting with the routine maintenance of sewer pump stations, which encompasses cleaning, debris removal, and general upkeep.

Inspection and Reporting
Tasks include walking along sewer lines to identify and report any visible issues or concerns to higher-level staff for further action.

Site Cleanup
This involves assisting with the cleanup of sites after sewer maintenance or emergency response activities to restore them to their original state.
Crew Member II

Water and Sewer Line Maintenance
Assisting with and performing the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City's water and sewer lines. Responsibilities include repairing sewer lines and replacing gasket sleeves and fittings, especially at pump stations and along main lines.

Roadway and Surface Restoration
This involves performing roadway and surface restoration tasks, such as asphalt patching and replacing concrete curbs and gutters. Additionally, it includes repairing sidewalks, conducting brick work, and installing materials like rubber mulch.

Fire Hydrant Maintenance
Tasks include installing, repairing, and maintaining fire hydrants. It also involves exercising valves with appropriate equipment and performing hydrant flushing according to system maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • Educational background equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • One (1) year of experience and/or training involving manual labor or successful progression from Crew Member I; or equivalent education, and/or experience.
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum qualifications, licenses, certifications, and training requirements established for the preceding position within the Crew Member career ladder.
  • Must possess a VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days in position.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
This essential position involves working around heavy equipment and traffic in outdoor conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, and dirt. Employees are expected to follow established safety procedures and may assist with emergency response activities as needed.
