Responsibilities

Crew Member I
 
Sidewalk and Street Maintenance
Responsible for sweeping sidewalks and streets to ensure cleanliness and safety for pedestrian use.



Waste Management
Collect litter and empty trash receptacles efficiently to maintain a tidy and welcoming environment.



Grounds Upkeep
Perform basic grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns and raking leaves to keep outdoor spaces well-groomed and attractive.
Crew Member II
 
Vehicle and Equipment Operation
Operate various street sanitation vehicles, such as street sweepers, water and trash trucks, dump trucks for snow and leaf removal, and recycling trucks. Additionally, handle equipment like forklifts, tractors, mowers, and weed eaters for ground maintenance tasks, and drive roll-off trucks to empty dumpsters at recycling centers.

Maintenance and Safety
Clean and maintain gutters, drainage areas, and public infrastructure, performing minor repairs as needed, including barricade maintenance. Ensure safety by providing traffic control during road work and maintenance operations. Remove debris and hazards from public areas, including clearing dead animals, following safety and sanitation procedures.

Administrative and Public Interaction
Accurately complete work orders, activity logs, and daily reports on time. Interact professionally with the public, offering directions and assistance to residents and visitors.

Requirements

  • Educational background equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • One (1) year of experience and/or training involving manual labor or successful progression from Crew Member I; or equivalent education, and/or experience.
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum qualifications, licenses, certifications, and training requirements established for the preceding position within the Crew Member career ladder.
  • Must possess a VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days in position.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
This essential position involves working around heavy equipment and traffic in outdoor conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, and dirt. Employees are expected to follow established safety procedures and may assist with emergency response activities as needed.
