SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reporting to the Supervisor, Animal Services/Municipal Law Enforcement, responsible for the health care and general well being of all sheltered animals under the care of the City of Hamilton.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

Examines all incoming animals to evaluate health status (including whether or not the animal has been altered).

 

Establishes the existence of microchips or tattoos.

 

Attends to injuries, sterilizes and dresses minor wounds and treats for parasites and infections.

 

Administers medications such as antibiotics, analgesics, fungicides and antihistamines, either orally, topically by nasal aspiration or by injection.

 

Performs laboratory tests for various communicable diseases such as parvovirus and feline leukemia virus.

 

Euthanizes animals that are mortally injured or ill.

 

Evaluates animal behaviours and viability as part of an Assessment Team.

 

Prepares critically ill or injured animals for transfer to a veterinary clinic.

 

Prepares healthy and adoptable animals for our adoption program, transfers to S.P.C.A. or appropriate rescue organizations.

 

Facilitates animal adoptions.

 

Maintains clinical records to include recording daily observations.

 

Assists with animal intake, surrender, license sales, adoptions and discharge.

 

Provides procedure recommendations respecting animal medical care, including comparative analysis of medicines in terms of efficacy, costs and delivery method.

 

Researches and recommends the purchase of examination and testing equipment.

 

Receives and responds to inquiries respecting adoptions, animal care, animal health and animal behaviour from the public, department staff and staff from outside agencies.

 

Provides excellent customer service.

 

Performs other duties as assigned as which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated ability to examine incoming animals and evaluate health status normally acquired through the completion of a Veterinary Technician's Diploma or a combination of education and experience.
  2. Must be registered with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians Association.
  3. Previous demonstrated animal care experience.
  4. Ability to multi-task and problem solve in a very fast paced environment.
  5. Must be physically capable of performing duties.  Demonstrated ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  6. Must experience no allergic reactions to animals, water or chemicals utilized in the Shelter.
  7. Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in animal care treatment.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work well in an emotional environment.
  9. Demonstrated ability to administer medications as required.
  10. Knowledge of Animal Research Act Regulations.
  11. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the public, peers and supervisors responding to inquiries or complaints.  Ability to act in a confident and professional manner under stressful situations and respond promptly to customer needs.
  12. Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain clinical notes.
  13. Experience in a computerized environment. Working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word.
  14. Provides excellent customer service.
  15. Must possess a Valid Class "G" Driver's Licence.

 

THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "G" DRIVER'S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.



SALARY: Salary Grade I

HOURS: 40 per week - various shifts over a twenty-four hour period on a seven day week.
