SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Reports to District supervisor of roadway maintenance within the Transportation Division – Roadway Maintenance Section.

 

Operators within Roadway Maintenance perform duties across various seasonal programs, including but are not limited to:

  • Road surface repair with hot and cold asphalt materials
  • Road shoulder maintenance
  • General ground litter/right of way debris removal.
  • Roadside mowing & mechanical weed trimming
  • Ditching & Culvert maintenance
  • Sidewalk maintenance
  • Vegetation management
  • General aesthetic maintenance


Operates and performs basic inspections and maintenance on various pieces of equipment such as but not limited to: crew cabs, mechanical equipment and associated implements, backhoes, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, sweepers, asphalt rollers, flushers, and crew cabs with crane and/or electric tailgate attachments.

 

Must conduct pre/post trip inspections on all equipment that the Operator is assigned and qualified to operate.  i.e. dump truck, crew cab, etc.

 

Operates hand tools and power tools with competence for summer maintenance programs. Such tools would include, but not limited to: shovels, picks, various grass cutting equipment, compressor, jackhammer, pumps, hot box components, concrete/chain/chop saws, grinder, small power tools, compactor, drills, leaf blowers, trash pumps, compaction equipment, and a variety of hand tools.

 

Performs duties in various locations of the Roadway Maintenance Section.  Duties vary dependant on location, rural or urban setting. All locations present different site conditions such as walking, bending, lifting, twisting, shovelling, kneeling & standing for prolonged periods may be required as part of this position. Duties include but not limited to filling potholes, shovelling, manual labour, traffic control (flagging), operation of various power tools, vehicles, grass cutting equipment, driving specialized equipment, concrete repairs, ground restoration duties, litter/bulk pick up, working around water.


Performs basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.


Works as part of a team and or independently.  Must be a motivated self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

 

Completes documentation such as but not limited to: daily activity logs, inspection sheets (i.e. pre-trip) and various reports, as required.

 

Interacts with the general public, external agencies, supervisors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner that uphold the City of Hamilton s’ Corporate values.

 

Works with competent knowledge in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

 

Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated roads maintenance experience and training related to duties and programs listed above normally acquired by a combination of education and relevant work experience. OSSD or equivalent would be considered an asset.
  2. Previous experience, training and competent ability to operate vehicles such as but not limited to: crew cabs, stake, dump trucks, other tools and equipment associated with road and sidewalk maintenance in a safe manner.
  3. Must be available and able to work shifts including Days, Afternoons, Nights, Weekends and Statutory Holidays and be able to respond to Overtime call in when required.
  4. Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions and take direction.  Ability to accurately complete various logs, documents, inspection forms and other administrative information.  Able to use fractions and decimal arithmetic and simple formulas, diagrams and drawings.
  5. Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including W.H.M.I.S. legislation, 70 Hour Regulations, Book 7 Traffic Control and Minimum Maintenance Standards.
  6. Must be able to lift a minimum of 23 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs.
  7. Must have good interpersonal skills to interact with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
  8. Must possess a valid Class "D" Licence with a "Z" endorsement and a Driver’s abstract clear of any demerit points and pending infractions.
  9. Working knowledge of electronic devices including tablets/computers utilizing Web search engines, GPS tools, and windows functions an asset.
  10. Demonstrated experience operating a CVOR vehicle for more than 3 years an asset.
  11. Must be able to work in adverse road & weather conditions.
  12. Must obtain First Aid with CPR C within 9 months.
  13. Candidates being considered for this position must satisfactorily pass a review of the candidates current driving abstract, driving evaluation, and interview. 


THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "DZ" DRIVER'S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.


NOTE 1: This position will transfer seasonally and will assume the responsibilities of the winter operator.  These duties include but are not limited to:  operate and maintain various pieces of equipment/vehicles such as industrial size snow blowers, general size snow blowers, single and tandem axle sander/plow trucks, backhoes, tractors and front end loaders, relating to the winter control program. Performs pre-trip inspections and is responsible for related documentation as per MTO and City of Hamilton policies and procedures.  Remove snow from sidewalks, pathways, and roads by shoveling, ploughing, blowing, sanding or salting.  Perform truck driver/labourer duties.
