Ice Plant Operator I

Performs operation and maintenance of the fish dock, cold storage and ice production facility and the maintenance of accurate record systems for services rendered by the Fish Dock facility. Assists the Fish Dock Supervisor in overseeing the safe operation and compliance by all fish dock users.

1. Operates the fish dock, cold storage and ice production facility.
2. Performs preventative and routine maintenance, repairs and record keeping on refrigeration equipment, ice delivery systems, hydraulic crane systems, and fish dock structure.
3. Installs structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing improvements and fabricates items for ice plant and fish dock facility as directed.
4. Assists or performs collection/disposal of solid waste and waste oil at fish dock and ice plant.
5. Performs snow removal to maintain accessibility to fish dock cranes.
6. Responsible for dock operations and training, testing and evaluation of crane operators.
7. Maintains and monitors computer card access system, insuring accurate information and collection and recording.
8. Coordinates equipment scheduling and use with user groups ie. fishermen, processors, cash buyers, etc.
9. Occasionally maintains records of user charges for ice delivery, cold storage, and fish dock hoists. Assures that required accounting information is transmitted to the Fish Dock Supervisor.
10. May be required to assist in the maintenance and operation of other Port and Harbor facilities as assigned.
11. Operates heavy equipment in the performance of job functions at the fish dock.
12. Performs other duties as directed by the Fish Dock Supervisor or Port and Harbor Director.

Three years' experience maintaining and operating refrigeration systems preferred. Working knowledge of ice plant or complex refrigeration/blast freezing system, flake ice machines, ice conveying systems or similar type equipment desired. Vocational/technical school in refrigeration or equivalent experience preferred. Experience in electrical systems and operation and maintenance of mobile equipment desired. One year vocational/technical school or two years working experience with hydraulic systems, and working knowledge of crane rigging and operation desired. Experience operating heavy equipment desired. Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, welding and carpentry desired. First Aid CPR certification will be required to obtain within first year of employment. Basic computer skills required. High School diploma or G.E.D., valid Driver's License required.

Frequently works without supervision or assistance. Responsible for proper care of tools. Independent judgment required in carrying out the necessary required maintenance in the performance of assigned duties. Activities are a major source of potential liability to the City.

High frequency of contact with users of Port and Harbor or other City facilities. Moderate contact with key service personnel. Low frequency of contact with government officials. Infrequent contact with other key personnel of the City and attendance at public meetings.

High frequency of exposure to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. Frequently involved in heavy physical exertion lifting up to 50 pounds or moving equipment and in working in confined spaces or awkward positions while using tools and equipment. Frequently handles hazardous materials such as ammonia and other contaminants. Position required to be on call and available for overtime. Work on holidays, weekends and various shifts will be required.
