AMERISAFE is seeking a detailed-oriented, productivity driven professional to add to our “Excellence Team” based in DeRidder, LA.  The Underwriting Technician plays a critical role in the new business underwriting process by managing submission intake, performing initial triage and risk screening, and ensuring submissions meet minimum underwriting requirements before assignment to an Underwriter. This role supports underwriting efficiency, submission quality, and service standards by allowing Underwriters to focus on risk selection and pricing.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Basic typing and computer skills, including proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word and Excel) 
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately maintain records in a production‑oriented environment
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with internal partners and external agents under guidance
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and self‑manage workload to achieve goals and service standards
  • Team‑oriented, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Underwriting and other internal partners
  • Ability and willingness to learn and apply underwriting workflows, systems, terminology, and guidelines, 
  • Ability to develop risk awareness, triage skills, and judgment over time 
  • Prior exposure to insurance, underwriting, or administrative operations preferred


Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Apply working knowledge of underwriting systems, workflows, and guidelines to support end‑to‑end new business intake and ensure smooth handoffs to Underwriters
  • Enter and maintain new business submissions in the underwriting management system with a high level of accuracy, ensuring complete, timely documentation and status updates in accordance with service standards
  • Verify minimum submission requirements, confirm application completeness, and identify missing or incomplete information to ensure readiness for underwriting review
  • Perform guideline‑driven preliminary risk assessments to identify eligibility considerations, potential red flags, and determine appropriate disposition (accept, refer, or decline) within assigned authority
  • Request additional information and order pre‑quote safety visits, as needed, and own assigned submissions through proactive agent communication, follow‑up, and response to submission status inquiries
  • Meet established turnaround time, accuracy, and service level expectations
  • Participate in special projects and additional assignments that support underwriting and operational objectives
  • Foster the AMERISAFE culture by embracing the pillars of consistency, focus, frugality, ownership, and service in daily interactions and decision-making 

 

Upon an offer and acceptance of employment with AMERISAFE, you will be required to complete our pre-employment screening, which includes a criminal background check, a 10-panel drug test and, if applicable, a review of your motor vehicle report. A 10-panel drug test includes amphetamine/methamphetamine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine metabolite (BZE), marijuana metabolite (THCA), methadone, methaqualone, codeine/morphine, phencyclidine, propoxyphene.
