\r\n\r\n\r\nThe State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC),�is currently recruiting Phlebotomists (35 hour) to perform routine specimen collection and laboratory procedures in a correctional healthcare environment.\r\n\r\n\r\nPlease note: This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies across any of the state’s 14 correctional facilities as openings arise. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility this class is accountable for independently performing a variety of venipuncture techniques, collecting and preparing specimens from patients and providing related administrative laboratory support.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n\r\n Performs a variety of routine blood draws from patients including venipuncture, heel sticks and finger sticks using standard equipment;\r\n Collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum and throat swabs for laboratory testing;\r\n Accessions specimens utilizing standard procedures for positive patient identification and records appropriate collection information in accordance with established protocol;\r\n Performs various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and regulatory requirements;\r\n Provides clerical support such as, collecting co-pays, answering telephone calls, answering general questions concerning test orders and collections, taking messages or triages calls;\r\n Prepares test order forms and record entries in the reference laboratory log (computerized or handwritten);\r\n Maintains compliance with laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices;\r\n Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs;\r\n Attends in-service training as required;\r\n Maintains inventory and stocks/restocks supplies;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
\r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques;\r\n appropriate blood processing and handling procedures;\r\n medical terminology;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n keyboard skills;\r\n basic math skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n understand and follow specific clinical protocol and procedures;\r\n interact courteously and in an understanding manner with patients of all ages;\r\n move 30 to 40 pounds to stock supplies and move or support patients;\r\n understand and carry out written and oral instructions;\r\n keep simple records and perform simple arithmetical calculations;\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience as a phlebotomist in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulated laboratory within the last five (5) years.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or an organization acceptable to the Department of Correction which provides relevant training may be substituted for the General Experience.\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n\r\n Experience working with Correctional or Forensic populations;\r\n Experience working with Electronic Health Records;\r\n Experience working in a hospital setting;\r\n Experience working in a locked institutional setting;\r\n Experience working in a Clinical Laboratory setting.\r\n\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification.\r\n
WORKING CONDITIONS
\r\n Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunization for communicable diseases;\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to lift standard laboratory equipment, trays/boxes of glassware;\r\n Incumbents in this class may be exposed to disease carrying substances and moderately disagreeable conditions.\r\n\r\n
