Join Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) and take the lead on developing, programming, optimising and operating advanced CNC machining capabilities, working closely with internal teams, software vendors and machine tool suppliers. It's a rare opportunity to combine hands-on machining expertise with manufacturing engineering capability, and to help shape how advanced manufacturing research and technology development is delivered for NSW.

 

As Senior Tooling Engineer, you will lead the implementation and continuous improvement of CAM programming across the AMRF - programming, validating and optimising CNC machining operations, including the development and maintenance of post-processors and machine control instructions. You'll set up, operate and maintain CNC machines, tooling and work holding systems, interpret technical drawings, specifications and CAD/CAM models, and develop the machining processes, tooling strategies, inspection methods and quality controls that underpin world-class outcomes. Beyond the machine floor, you'll troubleshoot and validate CNC programs, provide technical leadership and mentoring to workshop and junior engineering staff, and work closely with our Applications, Workshop and Process Control teams to solve technical challenges and deliver project outcomes that matter.

  • The versatility to balance engineering, programming and hands-on machining responsibilities - juggling multiple concurrent projects, competing priorities and tight delivery schedules without compromising quality.
  • Sound judgement and autonomy: you're comfortable making decisions within delegated authority, know when to escalate sensitive or high-risk matters, and take full accountability for the quality and accuracy of your technical work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability - weighing up alternatives, exploring creative options and designing practical solutions to machining and process challenges.
  • Resilience and adaptability, with the initiative to respond quickly as situations change, give and receive frank feedback, and stay committed to continuous learning in a fast-evolving field.
  • Clear, confident communication skills - able to translate complex technical concepts for varied audiences and collaborate effectively across engineering, workshop and process-control teams.
  • A Technology-driven mindset, keeping pace with emerging manufacturing tools and trends and using them to lift efficiency, quality and outcomes across the facility.
