Veterinary Rehabilitation Assistant (Full-Time or Part-Time)
Position Summary
Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists (CVSS) is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and team-oriented Veterinary Rehabilitation Assistant to join our growing Rehabilitation Department. This position supports our rehabilitation therapists and veterinarians in providing exceptional patient care to animals recovering from surgery, injury, neurologic disease, and chronic mobility conditions.
The ideal candidate enjoys working closely with patients and clients, is detail-oriented, and is passionate about improving the quality of life for pets through rehabilitation and physical therapy.

- Hourly, non-exempt position
- Some evenings and weekends may be required
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assist rehabilitation therapists/veterinarians with patient treatments and therapy sessions.
- Safely restrain and handle canine and feline patients of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Assist with therapeutic exercises, stretching programs, and mobility assistance.
- Monitor patients during rehabilitation treatments and report concerns to the rehabilitation team.
- Assist with patient intake, weight collection, and medical record documentation.
- Maintain patient cleanliness and comfort during appointments.
Rehabilitation Support
- Prepare patients and equipment for rehabilitation appointments.
- Assist with underwater treadmill sessions, therapeutic exercises, laser therapy, shockwave therapy, and other rehabilitation modalities as directed.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain rehabilitation equipment and treatment areas.
- Ensure therapy supplies are stocked and organized.
- Assist with home exercise program demonstrations and client education.
Client Service
- Provide exceptional customer service to clients.
- Communicate professionally with pet owners regarding appointments and patient needs.
- Assist with scheduling and appointment flow as needed.
- Reinforce rehabilitation recommendations and home care instructions as directed by the rehabilitation therapist or veterinarian.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment logs.
- Assist with inventory management and supply ordering.
- Support department organization and workflow efficiency.
- Participate in staff meetings and continuing education opportunities.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to safely lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds independently and assist with larger patients.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift for extended periods.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Compassion for animals and their owners.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a veterinary hospital, animal care facility, kennel, or rehabilitation setting.
- Veterinary Assistant experience.
- Interest in veterinary rehabilitation, physical therapy, sports medicine, or animal fitness.
- Knowledge of animal behavior and handling techniques.
- Fear Free certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, and kneeling.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and assist with heavier patients.
- Ability to work around animals, cleaning chemicals, and wet environments.
- Ability to safely assist with patient transfers and mobility support.
