DoorDash Labs, established in 2018, serves as the innovation hub for DoorDash, focusing on developing automation and robotics solutions to enhance last-mile logistics. The team's mission is to create technologies that support and augment human networks, aiming to improve efficiency for Dashers, merchants, and consumers alike. We’re ruthlessly focused on business impact. We are a highly senior team composed of former pioneers from a variety of different robotics industries. As of 2025, DoorDash has completed 10B lifetime deliveries. We’re focused on how to do the next 10B even better
About the Role
~3 min readAs a Hardware Engineer, Electronics Packaging & Vehicle Integration, you will lead the mechanical architecture, design, and delivery of electromechanical systems for DoorDash’s next-generation autonomous delivery vehicle. You will develop robust packaging solutions for compute, electrical, communications, and sensor-related hardware that operate reliably in demanding real-world fleet environments.
This role sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, vehicle integration, and product reliability. You will partner closely with electrical engineering, PCB design, industrial design, systems engineering, manufacturing, supplier partners, reliability, and operations teams to turn system requirements into durable, manufacturable, serviceable, and cost-effective product designs.
You will own designs from concept through launch, including electronic enclosures, housings, mounting systems, seals, connector interfaces, and vehicle-level integration features. Success in this role requires strong mechanical design judgment, practical experience with production processes, and the ability to resolve cross-functional packaging tradeoffs.
Responsibilities:
- Own the mechanical design and release of electronic packaging, housings, enclosures, and vehicle integration solutions in support of program timing and product launch.
- Design components and assemblies including castings, injection-molded parts, stampings, seals, brackets, PCBA mounts, connector interfaces, and vehicle mounting interfaces.
- Create and maintain production-quality 3D CAD and drawings; lead CAD design reviews with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Define mechanical requirements and interfaces for electrical, compute, communications, and other electromechanical subsystems.
- Perform design calculations, GD&T development, tolerance stack-ups, and other engineering analyses needed to validate design intent.
- Develop and execute analysis and test plans for new designs, including proof-of-concept builds, bench testing, and design validation activities.
- Partner with electrical engineers and PCB designers to integrate components into reliable, manufacturable electromechanical assemblies.
- Lead DFx activities with manufacturing and supplier partners, incorporating design-for-manufacturing, assembly, serviceability, reliability, and cost considerations.
- Identify design risks, drive technical tradeoff decisions, and communicate design progress, issues, and mitigation plans to program stakeholders.
- Support supplier engagement, prototype builds, root-cause investigations, and continuous product improvement through launch and fleet deployment.
Contribute materially to the form and function of a high profile delivery robot— your work will be on display for all to see and interact with You want to build products that millions of people interact with—not just drive. Every engineering decision directly impacts the customer experience. You're energized by solving first-of-their-kind engineering problems at the intersection of robotics, automotive engineering, and logistics. You enjoy working on products that move quickly from concept to real-world deployment, where engineering decisions immediately translate into operational impact. You believe autonomous delivery has the potential to fundamentally reshape local commerce by making deliveries safer, more sustainable, and more affordable. You're excited to join a highly collaborative team where mechanical engineering plays a central role in defining the future of autonomous last-mile delivery.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 6+ years of experience designing electromechanical products, electronics packaging, vehicle systems, robotics, automotive systems, or other ruggedized hardware from concept through production.
- Experience packaging compute, electrical, communications, sensor, or power-electronics hardware into mechanically robust assemblies and enclosures.
- Strong mechanical design experience with components and processes such as die castings, injection moldings, stampings, extrusions, machined parts, seals, gaskets, brackets, and welded assemblies.
- Experience integrating PCBAs, connectors, wire harnesses, cooling solutions, and serviceable electrical interfaces into complete electromechanical systems.
- Deep understanding of design for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, reliability, cost, and supplier capability.
- Extensive CAD experience, preferably NX, Team Center, with SolidWorks or CATIA also welcomed; able to create robust parametric models, detailed drawings, and complex assemblies.
- Strong command of GD&T, tolerance analysis, stack-ups, datum strategy, and interface definition for assemblies with multiple mechanical and electrical contributors.
- Familiarity with structural design, vibration, shock, fatigue, ingress protection, corrosion prevention, and environmental sealing for outdoor or vehicle-mounted products.
- Ability to use engineering fundamentals and data to make design decisions; experience with FEA, hand calculations, test data analysis, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools is a plus.
- Experience developing and executing design verification plans, proof-of-concept testing, and root-cause investigations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical discussions and resolve packaging tradeoffs across mechanical, electrical, systems, manufacturing, reliability, and operations teams.
- Comfortable moving between CAD design reviews, supplier discussions, prototype builds, test execution, and hands-on troubleshooting on the shop floor.
- Experience with commercial vehicles, autonomous vehicles, robotics, or other high-duty-cycle fleet products is strongly preferred.
