We have a range of exciting internship opportunities for you! You’ll have the chance to work alongside our experienced team in our Research and Development Centre.

If you want to apply your learning to provide solutions to complex challenges, then we want to hear from you.

What we do?

Dual Inventive works with our sister company Core-Vision to develop and produce state-of-the-art wireless products enabling people to work more safely and efficiently in the rail sector, whilst maximising rail capacity, and improving reliability.

We want to be ahead of our competitors, so we’re constantly looking for new technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of track workers through product advancements.

What will you bring?

Your learning and knowledge is what we are looking for. You are more likely to be familiar with the latest technologies and innovations that will help take our products to the next level.

Working in the rail sector we are faced with lots of challenges. We want to be at the forefront of our competitors, by tackling these challenges head on providing customers with solutions to meet their needs.

For example:

  • How do we know which new technologies are available in the world?
  • How can we prove them?
  • And more importantly, how can we implement these technologies in the rail sector?

As an intern, you will contribute to groundbreaking research that could potentially shape the future of rail. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your technical skills whilst gaining valuable insights into the technology side of the rail sector.

Your assignment

You will join a professional Research and Development team, where you’ll be given an assignment to work on which will form part of a bigger challenge we face in the rail industry.

Your contribution may involve Programming software in Golang, C++, Embedded C, Python and many more languages, experimenting with data simulation, working with machine learning or AI systems, soldering PCBs, using development kits to build your own POC, or testing devices in the field.

Together, we will work with you to define the scope of the assignment ensuring that you are confident and excited about the task in hand, while aligning it with Dual Inventive’s overarching vision.

What to expect

  • Your day will start with a stand-up meeting with both the team and your coach.
  • You’ll participate in two-weekly sprints.
  • Hybrid working options will be available
  • Regularly, you and the team will present your ongoing work to the company’s product owners and stakeholders.

During your internship, you will have continuous support from an experienced team of developers and a coach who will guide you through the internship.

What you will be working on?

We can’t reveal all the details upfront as we don’t want to give away our secrets and we want to keep an element of surprise. But we want to give you an insight into the assignments you may be working on.

Safety PLC Integration for Railway Proof of Concept (PoC)

In this internship, you will work on integrating a Safety PLC into an existing Safety Cloud system used in railway applications. The cloud communicates over 4G via an gateway, which translates messages to CANopen. Your task is to ensure the Safety PLC can communicate correctly within this architecture and support safe remote operation.

Goal of the Internship

Develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) where a Safety PLC can be:

  • Controlled and monitored via a Safety Cloud platform
  • Accessed through a mobile phone interface
  • Connected via a 4G gateway using CANopen communication
  • Operating with fail-safe logic suitable for railway environments

Your Tasks

  • Select a suitable Safety PLC supporting CANopen
  • Set up and configure communication via the existing 4G → CANopen gateway
  • Develop a fail-safe PLC application (e.g., simplified railway point/track switching logic)
  • Implement basic monitoring and control functions
  • Demonstrate end-to-end communication from cloud to PLC and back

Research Questions

During the internship, you will investigate and present:

  • Which PLC programming languages and environments are used in industry (e.g., IEC 61131-3: Structured Text, Ladder Logic)?
  • How are Safety PLC applications tested and validated before deployment?
  • Are there virtual or simulated PLC environments available for development?
  • How can CANopen networks be tested or simulated without full hardware setups?
  • What are the best practices for testing fail-safe and safety-critical logic?
  • How is cloud-to-device communication verified in industrial safety systems?

Development of a Sensor Board with CANopen & Bluetooth Integration

This internship focuses on the design and development of a sensor board (PCB) that connects to an existing gateway via CANopen, enabling data transmission over 4G to a cloud system. The assignment builds on prior research addressing the challenge of reliably identifying and linking Bluetooth sensors in environments with multiple nearby systems.

Background

In previous work, the following question was explored:

How can a system reliably identify its specific Bluetooth sensors among multiple nearby systems, and ensure the sensor data is consistently linked and transmitted correctly over CANopen?

This internship translates that concept into a practical hardware solution.

Goal of the Internship

Design and develop a working sensor board (PCB) that:

  • Collects data from multiple onboard and/or external sensors
  • Identifies and connects to the correct Bluetooth sensors
  • Transmits all relevant data via CANopen to an existing gateway
  • Enables further transmission over 4G to the cloud
  • Uses powerline as the only wired connection (power + communication constraints)

Your Tasks

  • Design and develop a PCB (sensor board)
  • Select appropriate microcontroller / CAN / Bluetooth components
  • Integrate various sensors (e.g., environmental, motion, or other relevant types)
  • Implement firmware for:
    • Sensor data acquisition
    • Bluetooth device identification and pairing logic
    • CANopen communication
  • Ensure robust and reliable data mapping between (Bluetooth) sensors and CANopen messages
  • Test and validate the full system with the existing gateway

Working together

Through collaborative working, we can make a real impact and transform rail safety.
