ACCOUNTABLE FOR: The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist is accountable for the development, oversight, and quality of psychiatric rehabilitation services provided to individuals enrolled in the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program. This role ensures that services are individualized, recovery-oriented, developmentally appropriate when applicable, and aligned with each participant’s Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP) or Individual Treatment/Rehabilitation Plan (ITRP).
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time or part-time opportunities available. Services are generally provided Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Schedules may vary based on program needs, client service requirements, staff coverage, and employee availability. Evening, weekend, and flexible hours may be required as needed.
CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, W-2 employment status; exempt or non-exempt depending on final duties, salary basis, pay structure, and applicable wage-and-hour requirements.
COMPENSATION RANGE: $20.00–$35.00 per hour commensurate with education, licensure, certification, psychiatric rehabilitation experience, community mental health background, and experience serving adults, minors, or both.

ANTICIPATED TRAVEL: Approximately 20% travel required. A company vehicle may be provided. No additional travel compensation provided.
SUMMARY OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist supports the effective delivery, oversight, and quality of psychiatric rehabilitation services for adults, minors, or both, depending on credentials, qualifications, experience, and program assignment.
This position ensures that rehabilitation services are meaningful, person-centered, recovery-oriented, and connected to each participant’s IRP or ITRP. The role supports direct care staff, reviews rehabilitation activities, provides staff education, promotes proper documentation, and helps maintain compliance with program standards, HIPAA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist works with program leadership, supervisors, licensed professionals, direct care staff, families, caregivers, and other authorized team members to support participant progress, service quality, and a safe, respectful, trauma-informed, culturally responsive service environment.
SCHEDULED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and assure that rehabilitation services meet the needs of individuals served by the program.
- Provide oversight of the daily psychiatric rehabilitation services.
- Ensure services are consistent with each participant’s IRP or ITRP.
- Educate direct care staff on how to provide rehabilitation services that correlate with goals identified in the IRP or ITRP.
- Review rehabilitation activities to ensure they are meaningful, person-centered, recovery-oriented, and goal-directed.
- Advise program leadership on the development and implementation of rehabilitation services.
- Support staff in understanding psychiatric rehabilitation principles, documentation requirements, and service expectations.
- Promote recovery, independence, wellness, social functioning, coping skills, daily living skills, and community integration.
- Collaborate with program directors, supervisors, licensed professionals, direct care staff, families, caregivers, and other team members as appropriate.
- Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, trainings, quality improvement activities, and program planning.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation in accordance with program standards.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable privacy and regulatory requirements.
- Support a safe, respectful, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and client-centered service environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN SERVING ADULTS
When assigned to adult psychiatric rehabilitation services, the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist shall:
- Develop and assure that rehabilitation services meet the needs of adults served by the program.
- Oversee the daily program of rehabilitation services for adults.
- Educate direct care staff on how to provide services that correlate with goals identified in the participant’s IRP or ITRP.
- Support services that promote recovery, independence, community living skills, social skills, coping skills, wellness, and functional improvement.
- Monitor service delivery to ensure activities are appropriate, individualized, and connected to rehabilitation goals.
- Identify service gaps and recommend improvements to strengthen adult psychiatric rehabilitation programming.
RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN SERVING MINORS
When assigned to psychiatric rehabilitation services for minors, the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist shall:
- Meet the applicable credentialing requirements for serving minors.
- Advise the Program Director regarding the development and implementation of rehabilitation services for minors.
- Maintain overall responsibility for rehabilitation services for minors, including service development, quality, and oversight.
- Oversee the daily program of rehabilitation services for minors.
- Educate direct care staff on how to document the correlation between rehabilitation activities and IRP or ITRP goals.
- Support developmentally appropriate, strengths-based, and family-aware rehabilitation programming.
- Ensure services address emotional, behavioral, social, community, educational, and functional skill needs as appropriate.
- Assist staff in providing services appropriate for youth with serious emotional disorders and related behavioral health needs.
UNSCHEDULED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to urgent participant, staff, documentation, service delivery, or program concerns as needed.
- Support crisis-related coordination, urgent rehabilitation service needs, incident follow-up, and continuity planning as assigned.
- Assist with unexpected staffing support, participant service concerns, family or caregiver coordination, and community-based service needs.
- Assist with unplanned audits, reviews, quality assurance requests, or compliance-related program needs.
- Coordinate communication between direct care staff, program leadership, licensed professionals, families, caregivers, and other authorized team members.
- Assist with corrective action plans when rehabilitation service or documentation concerns are identified.
- Provide evening, weekend, flexible, or urgent support as needed based on program needs.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to travel between assigned program sites, offices, community-based settings, residential locations, schools, meetings, trainings, and other service locations as needed.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, speak, listen, and use a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, staff, caregivers, community providers, and leadership.
- Ability to complete electronic documentation and participate in meetings, trainings, case reviews, and quality improvement activities.
- Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 20 pounds of files, supplies, or program materials.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work may take place in office, community-based, residential, school, and program settings.
- Regular interaction with individuals experiencing behavioral health, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, social, and functional challenges.
- Must be able to work in a regulated behavioral health and psychiatric rehabilitation environment.
- Standard services are generally provided Monday through Friday during business hours; however, evening, weekend, and flexible hours may be required.
- Approximately 20% travel may be required for client visits, meetings, trainings, program activities, and community-based services.
- Must maintain professionalism, confidentiality, HIPAA compliance, trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive communication at all times.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles, recovery-oriented care, community mental health services, and person-centered service delivery.
- Ability to support rehabilitation services aligned with each participant’s IRP or ITRP.
- Understanding of documentation standards, service planning, rehabilitation goals, and compliance expectations.

LEVEL OF EDUCATION / TRAINING / QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must meet the applicable qualifications based on whether they will serve adults, minors, or both.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a related field required.
- CPRP or CFRP certification preferred.
- Experience working in psychiatric rehabilitation, community mental health, behavioral health, or human services strongly preferred.
- Candidate must have the education, license, certification, and experience required for the population served.
- Candidate must be able to provide documentation of current credentials, licensure, certification, education, and experience upon request.
- Must be able to comply with HIPAA, confidentiality, documentation, training, and regulatory requirements.
- Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be reliable, professional, organized, and able to work in a structured behavioral health program environment.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SPECIALISTS SERVING MINORS
A Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist serving minors must meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of direct care experience working with youth with a serious emotional disorder; and One of the following:
- Licensed mental health professional; or
- Certified by the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and has obtained the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association Children’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate.
- Candidates serving minors must provide a copy of their current license and/or certificate, as applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SPECIALISTS SERVING ADULTS
A Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialist serving adults must be one of the following:
- Licensed mental health professional; or
- Rehabilitation counselor currently certified by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification; or
- Bachelor’s-prepared Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner currently certified by the U.S. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.
- Candidates serving adults must provide documentation of current licensure or certification, as applicable.
