Position Overview
Hatalom is seeking a qualified Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the Marine Corps University (MCU) College of Distance Education and Training (CDET) Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Program (EWSDEP).
The Curriculum SME provides subject matter expertise, curriculum development support, instructional guidance, and academic consultation for Expeditionary Warfare School distance education programs. This position supports the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Professional Military Education (PME) curriculum designed to prepare Marine leaders for service in increasingly complex operational environments.
The SME will collaborate with resident school faculty, curriculum developers, and academic leadership to ensure course content remains current, academically rigorous, and aligned with Marine Corps doctrine, educational standards, and approved Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). This position is located at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia and is contingent upon contract award.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Academic Support
- Provide subject matter expertise across Expeditionary Warfare School curriculum areas, including:
- Ground Combat Arms
- Aviation
- Logistics
- Planning and the Marine Corps Planning Process (MCPP)
- Amphibious Operations
- Practical Exercises and Wargaming
- Leadership, Ethics, and Prerequisite Curriculum Development
- Develop, review, update, and maintain curriculum materials in support of approved Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
- Design and revise courseware, instructional materials, faculty guides, student exercises, assessments, and supporting educational resources.
- Ensure curriculum products are completed and ready for implementation no later than the last day of April each academic year.
- Support curriculum modernization efforts to incorporate current doctrine, operational lessons learned, and emerging concepts.
- Collaborate with resident faculty and academic leadership to evaluate curriculum effectiveness and recommend improvements.
Academic Instruction and Faculty Support
- Serve as an instructor for up to two assigned courses annually.
- Facilitate professional military education discussions using Socratic teaching methods and adult learning principles.
- Support faculty development initiatives and instructional workshops.
- Provide academic consultation and mentorship to faculty and curriculum developers.
- Assist with development of practical exercises, case studies, planning exercises, and wargaming activities.
Assessment and Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate course effectiveness through assessment of student performance and learning outcomes.
- Support academic reviews, curriculum assessments, and program improvement initiatives.
- Ensure educational materials align with Marine Corps University standards and professional military education objectives.
- Maintain awareness of evolving Marine Corps, Joint, and expeditionary warfare doctrine to support curriculum relevance.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Marine Corps Field Grade Officer (Major or above) or selectee for promotion to Major.
- Graduate of Career Level School (CLS), Intermediate Level School (ILS), School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW), Top Level School (TLS), or equivalent Professional Military Education program.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience serving as a Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Operations Officer, or Primary Staff Officer at the battalion, squadron, or higher level.
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more Expeditionary Warfare School curriculum subject areas.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to develop curriculum and educational content for adult learners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience utilizing Socratic teaching methodologies.
- Operational planning experience within Marine Corps or Joint organizations.
- Experience developing military education curriculum, training programs, or instructional materials.
- Previous faculty, instructor, curriculum developer, or academic program experience.
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Moodle.
- Experience facilitating practical exercises, planning exercises, or wargaming events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of Marine Corps doctrine, expeditionary warfare concepts, and operational planning.
- Strong curriculum development and instructional design skills.
- Ability to translate operational experience into effective educational content.
- Excellent research, writing, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, academic leadership, and military stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking capabilities.
Security Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Active Secret clearance (Tier 3 Investigation) required.
- Ability to maintain eligibility for continued access to Government facilities and systems.
Work Location
- Full-time position located at Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia.
- Occasional travel may be required in support of curriculum development, workshops, conferences, and academic activities.
