Quick Summary
Business Editor,
Business Editor, The Dallas Morning News:
The Dallas Morning News is looking for an editor who sees the biggest business story in America unfolding right here in Texas — and has the ambition and skill to own it.
The Business Editor will lead coverage of one of the most consequential economic regions in the country. This is not a caretaker role — it's an opportunity to define how one of America's great newspapers covers a city and state in the middle of a historic transformation.
Texas has surged past 31 million residents, and demographers project the state could approach 37 million by 2036 — the equivalent of adding a mid-sized city every year for the next decade. That growth is reshaping industries, straining infrastructure, rewriting the rules of housing and labor, and raising urgent questions about access, equity and opportunity. For a business journalist, there is no better beat in America right now.
Dallas-Fort Worth is home to more than 20 Fortune 500 companies, nearly 80 publicly traded firms exceeding $1 billion in revenue, two major airports, two of the industry's dominant airlines, and six major league sports franchises — all set against a backdrop of thousands of companies representing every sector of the modern economy. And the region's financial footprint is only growing: The rise of "Y'all Street" and the emergence of the Texas Stock Exchange signal that Dallas is no longer just a place where business happens; it's becoming a place where the rules of business get written. The stories here have national reach and global stakes.
We want an editor who sees the full picture — who can connect a corporate earnings report to a family's kitchen table, who pushes reporters to go deeper and move faster, and who understands that great business journalism isn't just about markets. It's about people, power and consequences. Strong editing instincts, a track record of developing talent, and the drive to build something are essential. Experience in digital storytelling, data journalism and audience development will set you apart.
Dallas itself is part of the draw. The cost of living is competitive, the talent pool is growing, and the energy here is unmistakable. It's a city that rewards ambition — in business and in journalism.
Come help us cover it!
What you’ll do
Lead a team of two assistant editors, 10 reporters and two columnists who produce distinctive business journalism — enterprise, features and breaking news — that sets our report apart from the competition. The team's work spans an expanded Business Sunday section, five email newsletters and the "Commerce Street" LinkedIn newsletter. You'll champion diverse voices, subjects and perspectives at every level of coverage.
Own the analytics. Track performance across your coverage areas, develop insights from the data and communicate goals, wins and losses clearly to your team and newsroom leadership.
Edit with high standards. Ensure stories are reported fairly, accurately and thoroughly, with sharp, compelling writing that serves our audience and holds up to scrutiny.
Build and develop talent. Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide honest coaching and feedback, manage performance and handle all aspects of hiring — from recruitment through onboarding and retention.
Work across the newsroom and beyond. Collaborate with departments inside and outside the newsroom to maximize the editorial and revenue potential of business content, including video, audio and special digital initiatives.
Stay hands-on. Bring strong news judgment, a willingness to create content when needed and the organizational ability to manage multiple priorities on deadline.
Communicate up and out. Meet regularly with your supervisor and maintain proactive, consistent communication about business coverage goals, team performance and major initiatives — no surprises.
Lead. Oversee scheduling, workload distribution and day-to-day team operations — and show up as a full contributor to newsroom-wide projects and initiatives.
