Main Purpose of Job:
To develop, lead, and mature the UX/UI discipline within ISS. The UI/UX Lead will define the overarching user experience strategy across a complex operational and customer facing product ecosystem. This role acts as a passionate advocate for user-centric design, partnering closely with Product Management to create simple, high-leverage solutions to complex problems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Vision & Product Advocacy

  • Develop and execute a clear vision for the function of UX & UI within the Product organization, acting as a passionate advocate of design methods for the rest of the business.
  • Support and enable a research-driven, customer-centric way of working moving beyond assumptions to observe real-world operational realities.
  • Partner seamlessly with Product Managers at a strategic level to align UX strategy with business objectives and product roadmaps.
  • Confidently work with and challenge stakeholders from all levels of seniority to ensure requirements solve genuine operational problems rather than just prescribing features.

Tactical Design & Delivery Orchestration

  • Lead the UI/UX execution during the critical pre-build design phase. Mandate observational research and user shadowing to identify manual workarounds and edge cases before designing solutions.
  • Enforce a strict quality gate where all designs are usability-tested against real-world exceptions and signed off by the business prior to engineering handover.
  • Work closely with the Product and Engineering teams to establish, advocate, and maintain a unified design system and common UI/UX language across all products.
  • Foster a collaborative partnership with UI Developers and Dev Leads, ensuring designs are technically viable within the architecture and do not introduce unnecessary technical debt.
  • Apply excellent creative problem-solving skills to transform complex B2B workflows into highly efficient, intuitive interfaces.

Team Leadership & Practice Management

  • Ensure all design team members are productive and deeply embedded in their respective agile product teams, working effectively alongside Product Owners.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, high-quality delivery, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Establish a career progression plan for the UX/UI practice within ISS.
  • Mentor, upskill, and inspire design team members to excellence.
  • Recruit new members and ensure they have enjoyable and effective onboarding experience.

Success Metrics:

  • Validation & Sign-Off Rate: 100% of major workflow designs are prototyped, usability-tested against real-world exceptions, and formally signed off by business stakeholders prior to engineering handover.
  • Delivery Alignment: Zero sprint delays caused by incomplete or technically unfeasible design specifications; seamless integration of the design discovery phase with the Release Manager’s delivery calendar.
  • Design System Adoption: Successful establishment and measurable adoption of a unified UI/UX design system across all internal product squads.
  • Team Maturation & Integration: Successful retention and measured productivity of the embedded UI/UX designers, ensuring they operate seamlessly alongside Product Owner.

Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of UI/UX design tools, including wire-framing and interactive prototyping (e.g., Figma), and the mechanics of building scalable design systems.
  • Strong theoretical and practical grasp of user-cantered design principles, field-based UX research methodologies, and agile product development life cycles.
  • Expertise in embedding product-led methodologies and user-centric design practices.
  • Familiarity with Agile frameworks—specifically how design integrates smoothly with the roles of Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Product Managers within a sprint ecosystem.

Skills:

  • Stakeholder Management: Confident and articulate communicator capable of constructively challenging assumptions, realigning senior stakeholders around actual user needs, and proving the business value of UX strategy
  • Workflow Translation: Strong capability to translate complex business requirements and operational constraints into simple, functional digital workflows.
  • Observational Research: Proven ability to design and lead structured design ceremonies (e.g., discovery workshops, journey mapping) to uncover genuine operational needs and document existing manual workarounds.
  • Creative Problem Solving: Advanced ability to design for operational leverage, focusing on reducing cycle times and minimizing friction rather than just improving visual aesthetics
  • Coaching & Mentorship: Strong leadership skills necessary to empower, guide, and embed strong-minded, creative, and collaborative design practitioners within agile teams.

Experience:

  • UI/UX Leadership: Extensive practical experience in a UI/UX Leadership role, backed by a robust portfolio showcasing B2B, enterprise, or complex operational software ecosystems.
  • Line Management: Proven experience managing, mentoring, upskilling, and scaling a team of UI/UX designers
  • Multi-Persona Design: Demonstrated experience designing for multi-persona environments, successfully balancing strict process standardization with the flexibility required for edge-case operational execution.
  • Product-Led Execution: Practical experience driving a product mindset across an organization, shifting teams from output-driven execution to outcome-driven, user-centric problem solving
