Position Description
The General Superintendent provides overall administrative and technical support at designated construction project sites. This requires a thorough knowledge of the company’s policies and procedures as well as the project goals, project plans, specifications, and Contract requirements. The General Superintendent works closely with superintendents, foremen, project managers, and executive leadership to drive field productivity, maintain quality and safety standards, and strengthen communication between field and office teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead field operations across one or more projects to deliver scope safely, on schedule, on budget, and to quality standards.
- Partner with Superintendents, foremen, project managers, subcontractors, owners, and design teams to coordinate day-to-day execution and resolve issues quickly.
- Establish a strong field operating rhythm (look-ahead planning, jobsite walkthroughs, coordination meetings) and drive timely decisions to prevent roadblocks to production.
- Own jobsite safety leadership by implementing company and site-specific safety plans, conducting inspections/audits, and ensuring OSHA and internal compliance.
- Drive schedule performance by aligning short-term plans with the master schedule and holding teams accountable to measurable commitments and milestones.
- Manage cost and productivity performance by monitoring labor productivity, manpower loading, and production metrics; implement corrective actions when variances occur.
- Lead self-perform execution planning including manpower, equipment utilization, means-and-methods, and coordination of materials/logistics.
- Lead quality execution through field inspections, documentation control (current contract docs/as-builts), and timely punch list/closeout completion.
- Develop and lead field talent by recruiting, training, mentoring, coaching, and conducting regular performance feedback for direct reports.
- Maintain clear communication and reporting between Field Operations, Project Management, and company leadership; escalate risks early with proposed solutions.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of construction experience, including at least 5 years managing multiple large job sites
- Proficiency with construction management software
- Strong knowledge of building plans, specifications, and safety standards
- Self-starter with goal-oriented leadership skills
Preferred Experience (includes, but is not limited to):
- Experience in Caribbean, island, or remote, logistically complex project sites
- Familiarity with sustainable building practices
- PMP or equivalent project management certification
Physical Demands & Work Environment

- Ability to work outdoors in varying Caribbean weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and sun exposure
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
- Ability to navigate active construction sites with changing ground conditions and elevations
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment as required
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Compensation & Benefits
The base salary for this position is one component of J. Benton Construction’s total compensation package. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including a candidate’s skills, experience, education, relevant qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
