Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings & weekends.


Job Summary: The Assistant Director of the Counseling Center assists with the oversight of direct service, training, and administrative functions necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Counseling Center. Provides oversight of staff therapist through matrix reporting structure. Provides leadership of program(s) and/or specialized therapy area(s).


Additional Department Summary: Provides oversight and direction to all suicide prevention efforts initiated from the Counseling Center including suicide prevention training efforts, oversight of the Student Tide Against Suicide student advisory board, and suicide prevention and awareness events, specifically the Suicide Awareness Week in September. Provides direct counseling services to enrolled University students, outreach and consultation services to members of the University community (with an emphasis on suicide prevention), and, as needed, training to students in the mental health professions. Rotates on-call throughout the year for the purpose of crisis intervention services.

Works with people in distress and encounters life-threatening emergencies requiring a high degree of sophistication of thought and creativity routinely, such intervening with a student who is acutely suicidal and making threats in his or her residential area. Follows Quality Improvement standards.

This position requires some after-hours work.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher in counseling, psychology, or social work and four (4) years of experience in consultation services, group therapy, teaching, outreach, student work, or case management. Licensure in the state of Alabama in good standing; OR licensed in another state and licensure eligible in Alabama with the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire if coming from another state or province.


Skills and Knowledge: Excellent judgment, problem solving, and a thorough knowledge of the myriad factors behind the resolution of psychological problems. Knowledge of and ability to adhere to all policies and procedures as contained in the Counseling Center Policy and Procedure Manual. Excellent human relations, communication, advocacy, and mental health intervention skills. Superior time and task management skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Basic computer skills (word processing and email). Ability to effectively interact with University community members for the purpose of program development. Demonstrates commitment to supporting all students.


Preferred Qualifications: College or University counseling center experience. Suicide prevention services and programs coordination experience. Suicide prevention training, outreach education, suicide crisis response, and related direct services to students experience.
