The Electrical Commissioning Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, documenting, and supporting the commissioning of electrical systems within mission-critical facilities. This role oversees electrical commissioning activities from pre-planning and factory testing through construction verification, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and post-occupancy support. The ideal candidate has strong experience commissioning high-, medium-, and low-voltage electrical systems and can effectively coordinate with construction, engineering, controls, operations, and commissioning teams.
Responsibilities
~3 min read- →Develop and maintain electrical commissioning plans in alignment with ASHRAE standards, project requirements, Cx specifications, Sequence of Operations, LEED Gold requirements, California Title 24, EHS requirements, and the Commissioning Plan/PEP.
- →Review design documents, project specifications, IFC drawings, and electrical sequences to identify commissioning requirements and potential issues.
- →Develop and finalize Factory Witness Test (FWT) lists and review factory test submissions with a focus on electrical equipment and systems.
- →Create electrical system verification checklists and Functional Performance Test (FPT) procedures for OAT, FAT, and IST activities.
- →Review, validate, and refine electrical Sequences of Operations (SOO) to ensure systems operate as designed.
- →Lead electrical equipment Factory Witness Testing at manufacturer facilities prior to shipment and document findings for project stakeholders.
- →Perform construction and installation verification inspections with a focus on electrical systems, equipment, structural supports, code clearances, sensors, and design compliance.
- →Serve as a Task Leader for designated electrical system testing activities and coordinate testing with other commissioning disciplines.
- →Execute Operational Acceptance Testing (OAT) on electrical systems and verify proper operation of electrical controls and software.
- →Perform Functional Acceptance Testing (FAT) to confirm electrical systems operate in accordance with approved sequences, design requirements, and project specifications.
- →Test intra-system dependencies between electrical systems and other building systems to verify proper operation and control sequences.
- →Participate in Integrated Systems Testing (IST) to verify coordinated operation between electrical systems and other mission-critical building systems.
- →Review and verify electrical load bank testing results and document system performance, efficiency, and operating metrics.
- →Issue Green Tag certification when electrical systems have successfully completed required commissioning activities and are ready for the next phase of testing or acceptance.
- →Identify, document, and track deficiencies, commissioning issues, and non-conformances through resolution.
- →Maintain detailed electrical commissioning documentation within the Smart Completions system.
- →Create and maintain Non-Conformance Logs (NCLs), commissioning punch lists, test records, and system documentation.
- →Generate comprehensive commissioning reports and provide accurate documentation to project stakeholders and the owner.
- →Verify electrical systems meet applicable LEED, energy-efficiency, ASHRAE 90.1, code, and project-specific requirements.
- →Review O&M manuals, as-built drawings, test documentation, and turnover packages for completeness and accuracy.
- →Attend weekly commissioning team meetings and provide updates on electrical commissioning progress, issues, risks, and upcoming activities.
- →Coordinate with MEP/FP inspectors, special inspectors, testing agencies, controls personnel, contractors, engineers, and other commissioning disciplines.
- →Collaborate with Facility Operations teams and project stakeholders to support system readiness, owner acceptance, and Blue Tag certification.
- →Lead or support training sessions for facility personnel covering electrical system operation, controls, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- →Assist with owner acceptance activities and resolution of outstanding electrical commissioning issues.
- →Support post-occupancy commissioning activities, including facility operations meetings, electrical system troubleshooting, LEED documentation, and final commissioning reports.
- →Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned to you in your role.
- Lighting Controls Technician (ATT-L) – strongly preferred
- 3–5+ years of hands-on electrical commissioning experience in semiconductor or high-tech facilities.
- Strong knowledge of NFPA 70E, OSHA, ASHRAE, LEED, and Title 24.
- Proven ability to interpret electrical drawings, sequences of operation, and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with Smart Completions or similar commissioning management systems.
- Excellent coordination, documentation, and communication skills.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Licensed Electrician (Journeyman or Master) preferred
- Proof of education, licenses, and certifications will be required where applicable.
