Nature of Work
NATURE OF WORK:�The Correctional Cadet is used as an entry level position for high school/college students into the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.� Cadets are assigned to the Montgomery County Detention Facility. They will perform duties related to corrections work but do not require correctional officer authority. Correction cadets will experience on-the-job training to learn to enforce related to the protection of life and property, crime prevention, and clerk duties.�Correction cadets will work in the Montgomery County Detention Facility providing assistance in areas that do not involve direct contact with the inmates of the detention facility.\r\n�\r\nCorrection cadets will receive close direction from trained, experienced correction officers and carry out their assignments in accordance with established operating procedures. During this period of employment, correction cadets are periodically evaluated for efficiency, general performance of duties, and continued eligibility for appointment as a correctional officer trainee. If cadets are not successful in obtaining employment as a correctional officer trainee, their employment as a cadet will be severed.\r\nSuccessful correction cadets may apply as a correctional officers as soon as they have graduated with a high school diploma or received an acceptable equivalent and meet the required age of 19. Along with already satisfactorily passing the required physical, polygraph examinations and having served a minimum of six months in the cadet program, their work (see below) will be evaluated through observations, conferences, and reports. Lastly, they must complete and pass the jail management course.\r\n�\r\n�\r\n
General Information
WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:\r\nThe following list of work\r\nresponsibilities was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not\r\nexhaustive and other similar duties may be required and assigned.\r\n\r\n Assist members of the Agency in\r\n accomplishing work objectives, as assigned. \r\n Assist in writing detailed incidents,\r\n activities, and other reports. \r\n Learn and practice techniques, including\r\n crime scene preservation, and evidence collection. \r\n Provide assistance to correctional\r\n officers in the Detention Facility in areas such as central control and\r\n administration and perform other various duties not requiring direct\r\n contact with the inmates. \r\n\r\n\r\n Perform the duties of the position of\r\n Station Clerk, as assigned. \r\n Staff Agency informational displays or\r\n booths. \r\n Perform administrative duties throughout\r\n the Agency, as assigned. \r\n Attend and participate in training\r\n sessions and other meetings, as required. \r\n Perform any other related duties, as\r\n assigned. \r\n\r\n�\r\nSpecific duties and responsibilities may vary, depending on the assigned\r\nlocation. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any\r\ntime at the direction of management, formally or informally, verbally or in\r\nwriting. \r\n�\r\n�\r\nKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND\r\nABILITIES: \r\nAbility to gain knowledge of the\r\nprinciples and practices, rules and regulations found in Standard Operating\r\nProcedures (SOP) and other manuals pertinent to the assigned job\r\nclassification. \r\nPossess strong community relations\r\nskills to deal with a wide range of people, including non-English speaking\r\nethnic persons, and persons with medical conditions which may render them\r\nmentally unclear. \r\nAbility to understand oral and\r\nwritten instructions, to speak effectively and articulately, to demonstrate\r\ngood listening skills, and to convey concern, understanding, and empathy. \r\nApply knowledge, experience, and\r\nreason to arrive at effective decisions for routine situations. \r\nAbility to utilize a high level of\r\ndiscretion, good judgment, and confidentiality. \r\nAbility to complete work\r\nassignments and reports in a timely manner. \r\nAbility to organize and determine\r\npriorities of diverse assignments. \r\nAbility to read and comprehend\r\nvarious documents. \r\nAbility to maintain composure and\r\nwork effectively in situations of on-the-job pressure. \r\nAbility to learn and apply\r\ntraining provided by the agency or designated agency. \r\nAbility to comprehend, understand\r\nand adhere to, at all times, agency policies, procedures, rules, and\r\nregulations. \r\nAbility to become CPR and First\r\nAid Certified. \r\nPossess a valid driver's license. \r\nOperate agency vehicle in\r\naccordance with established rules and regulations of this agency and the laws\r\nof the State of Alabama \r\nAbility to pass a comprehensive\r\nbackground investigation. \r\nAbility to pass random drug\r\nscreening. \r\n�\r\nWORKING CONDITIONS: During the course of their work, Cadets\r\nwill work in the Montgomery County Detention Facility providing assistance in\r\nareas that do not involve direct contact with the inmates of the detention\r\nfacility. \r\n�\r\n
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:�High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate and at least 18 years old, but not older than 21 years of age.�\r\n
