Main Purpose of Job

To apply and approve professional fire protection engineering principles and practices to ensure compliance with fire laws included in the Maryland Public Safety Article and requirements of the State Fire Prevention Code as applicable to design, construction, and use of new and existing buildings and processes from a life safety and property protection standpoint; serve as a technical code enforcement resource at the regional level to the staff of the agency; implement and coordinate code requirements with local fire and building officials and numerous state agencies; provide appropriate professional level of fire protection engineering services as directed by the Chief Fire Protection Engineer; provide code interpretation and fire protection engineering assistance to architects, engineers and other design professionals consistent with agency policies.

POSITION DUTIES

• Performs detailed\r\ntechnical review and evaluation of a broad scope and complexity of preliminary\r\ndesign and construction documents, including plans and specifications of all\r\ntypes of new construction projects and hazardous industrial processes for\r\nagency approval and compliance with applicable State fire laws, regulations and\r\nrelated referenced codes and standards in accordance with guidelines and\r\npriorities established by the State Fire Marshal and Chief Fire Protection Engineer.\r\n�\r\n• Performs critical\r\nreview of various fire protection system “shop drawings” prepared by fire\r\nprotection sub-contractors. Such Systems include automatic sprinkler; detection\r\nand alarm; standpipe; smoke control; emergency lighting and control, and other\r\nhighly specialized fire protection systems. Engineering calculations are made\r\nto verify and determine adequacy of design and performance of the system in\r\naccordance with required standards and good engineering practice.\r\n�\r\n�\r\n• Confers with and\r\nprovides professional fire protection engineering advice, guidance and\r\ndirection to architects, engineers, and other design professionals on\r\nacceptable methods and materials of achieving compliance with fire protection\r\ncriteria of fire and building codes. Approval is given to proper methods and\r\ndesigns impacting on the architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and\r\nstructural aspects of construction, equipment and processes from a fire\r\nprotection engineering standpoint.\r\n�\r\n• Researches,\r\nanalyzes, interprets and applies code criteria and standards\r\n�\r\n�\r\n• Other duties as\r\nassigned.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� A Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering from an accredited�college or university.\r\nExperience: Two years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work. \r\n������������������������������������������������OR\r\nEducation:�� A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited�college or university.\r\nExperience: Four years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.\r\nNote:�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Engineering classifications or Engineering specialty codes�in the fire protection engineering field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.�\r\n \r\n\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred\r\nqualifications:\r\n�\r\n1. Professional\r\nmemberships - Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), National Fire\r\nProtection\r\nAssociation (NFPA,\r\nInternational Code Council/Building Outreach (ICC)\r\n�\r\n2. Fire service\r\nexperience - 2 years\r\n�\r\n3. Academic Honor\r\nSocieties - Tau Beta Pi, Salamander\r\n�\r\n4. Code Development\r\nCommittee membership - NFPA, ICC\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties, which will require the candidates to be examined by a Physician. After an offer of employment, candidates for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions. \r\n2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\n3. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties in Baltimore; however, the work assignments may involve travel throughout the State. \r\n

SELECTION PROCESS
