This is a project pay position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions.

Major responsibilities as editor of Great Lakes Echo:

Overseeing student writers:

  • Recruitment
  • Training, skills-building and guest speakers
  • Mentoring
  • Organizing one (sometimes two) staff meetings a week

Editing:

  • Researching story ideas
  • Proposing and assigning stories and rejecting/modifying/focusing student-generated story ideas
  • Editing multiple drafts (usually at least three per story) of each story, including at least one-on-one in-person edit
  • Re-editing (for Great Lakes Echo style and format) stories repurposed from Environmental Reporting (JRN 472), Capital News Service (JRN 420) and other JRN classes such as JRN 300
  • Re-editing (for Great Lakes Echo style and format) stories produced by students in Knight Center-funded internships with nonprofit environmental news outlets in Michigan (including WKAR)
  • Assisting students designing their own visuals
  • Helping locate photos, graphics, maps and other visuals to accompany their stories
  • Coordinating rounds of editing with Knight Center director

Technology:

  • Posting story packages, including audio and video, on Great Lakes Echo website and social media
  • Scheduling the postings
  • Managing back end of website

Other: 

  • Responding to reader inquiries
  • Responding to story pitches from environmental organizations and other story sources
  • Helping with planning and logistics for Echo writers attending Society of Environmental Journalists and National Association of Science Writers conferences
