The Manager, Accounting will oversee the day-to-day accounting activities related to Oportun’s loan portfolio and debt, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies. This role will lead key aspects of the monthly close process, including account reconciliations, financial analysis, and review of loan- and debt-related accounting activities. The Manager will supervise and develop the accounting staff while providing guidance, review, and oversight of their work. This role will also partner cross-functionally to strengthen accounting processes, maintain effective internal controls, and support Oportun’s financial reporting objectives.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the day-to-day accounting activities for Oportun’s loan portfolio and debt, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately, completely, and in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.

• Lead the month-end close process for loan- and debt-related accounts, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, flux analysis and other close activities.

• Supervise, develop, and provide ongoing guidance to accounting staff, including reviewing work, establishing priorities, providing feedback, and supporting professional development.

• Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes and internal controls, identifying opportunities to automate manual or repetitive activities, streamline workflows, improve data quality, and increase the accuracy and efficiency of the close and reporting processes.

• Leverage AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies, where appropriate, to enhance accounting workflows, analysis, documentation, and operational efficiency while maintaining appropriate review, governance, and internal controls.

• Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Technology, and other Oportun business teams to implement process improvements, automation solutions, and scalable accounting practices supporting loan and debt activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

• Minimum of 6 years of progressive accounting experience.

• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and demonstrated ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting guidance.

• Experience with loan, lending, debt, or other financial-services-related accounting activities.

• Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop accounting professionals and effectively review the work of others.

• Ability and willingness to leverage AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies responsibly to enhance accounting analysis, documentation, and processes while maintaining appropriate review and controls.

• Experience with internal controls and accounting process improvements.

• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex accounting issues, identify root causes, and develop practical solutions.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines in a dynamic environment with limited supervision.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Finance and other cross-functional partners.

• CPA or progress toward CPA certification.

• Experience in consumer lending, financial services, fintech, banking, or a related industry.

• Experience implementing accounting process improvements, workflow automation, or financial-system enhancements.

• Familiarity with AI-enabled accounting, finance, analytics, or productivity tools and their application within an appropriately controlled environment.

The US salary range for this full-time position is $ 91,500 - $ 146,400.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects a national minimum and maximum range for new hire salaries for this position.
