Adolescent Health Advisor

Madagascar is seeking professionals with experience designing and implementing youth-focused programs that help young people reach their full potential.

Madagascar’s population is remarkably young—with more than half of its citizens under the age of 25—representing significant potential for the country’s future. Yet many young Malagasy, especially low‑income youth in rural areas, face barriers to quality education, high dropout rates, and limited employment opportunities. As a result, nearly three in ten students leave school before completing their studies. Limited experience with behavior change programs, insufficient funding for educational initiatives, and the tendency for qualified professionals to relocate to cities for more competitive career opportunities have created a critical need for external support.

As an Adolescent Health Advisor, you will play a critical role in advancing initiatives that strengthen access to quality education, preventive health services, and supportive environments for youth. By sharing your expertise, you will help build local capacity to address the interconnected challenges young people face and contribute to creating conditions where they can thrive.

Bachelor's degree in public health, nursing, sociology, or social work, with a focus on youth/adolescent health.
AND
Three or more years of experience implementing youth- or adolescent-friendly services programs.

The Volunteer will live in a city within the East Coast, Highland, or North-West region. The Volunteer will live in modest independent housing with electricity access and a shared water source. Daily commutes consist of walking, biking, or using public transportation to the work site or markets.

Gain international experience in behavior change communication and youth engagement, strengthening your global perspective and leadership capabilities.

Develop practical expertise in project design, program planning, and partnership development through meaningful public health work.

Build Malagasy language proficiency and cultural understanding in a way only possible through extended, immersive living in the community.

Conduct behavior change activities using evidence-based methodologies.

Facilitate school health sessions on life skills for adolescent health and reproductive health.

Facilitate youth clubs and camps to promote healthy living, positive youth development, and reproductive health.

Strengthen organizational planning by assisting partners with program design and documentation.

Train teams on data collection, reporting, and results-driven program improvement.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as developing the organization’s social media presence or supporting after-school sports.

After a five-week training on topics such as health and safety, you will move to a city where you will collaborate with the staff at youth centers run by the Ministry of Youth and other nearby non-governmental organizations working with youth to assess the needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Madagascar will equip you with Malagasy language resources and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
