Hourly Pay Range: $20.00-$22.00
The ASL Education Specialist will report to the ASL Coordinator. They will work as a team to coordinate all ASL teachings and activities, review and ensure the curriculum is updated and current, and support the department in growth and development of services. The ASL Education Specialist will also be involved in outreach efforts to organizations and schools and will foster existing and new relationships with regards to teaching ASL and encouraging Deaf Cultural Competency in the greater community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide direct teaching as part of the ASL program.
· Communicate effectively with students and staff.
· Provide support to independently contracted teachers and students, as needed, with regards to the use of technology for remote & hybrid teaching, skill assessments, and opportunities to apply learned skills.
· Respond to ASL program related inquiries.
· Stay informed & current on topics related to ASL instruction.
· Maintain standards of ASL instruction through regular review of curriculum, updating as necessary in order to remain current.
· Organize classroom systems, procedures, expectations and goals for learning.
· Adapt the curriculum, as necessary, based on the educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
· Foster and model a safe learning environment.
· Assist in outreach efforts and the expansion of ASL program.
· Develop professional relationship with other agencies, programs, and schools.
· Track and report on all ASL program activities.
· Provide instruction and support to DAS ASL program for refugees and immigrants.
· Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
· Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Fluent in ASL.
· Associate’s degree in ASL or Deaf Studies and 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Demonstrated understanding of ASL, Deaf Culture, and the educational environment.
· Comfortable with variety of technology including MS Suite of software and Google Classroom.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Sensitivity and experience working with diverse cultural communities and individuals.
· Ability to travel to various locations located in but not limited to Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua and Monroe Counties.
· Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods
