The School of Health and Clinical Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a research-intensive academic environment where excellence in research underpins teaching and community impact.

Within the School, the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences delivers a highly regarded Doctor of Optometry program alongside Higher Degree by Research training. The Department is committed to graduating socially accountable clinicians and researchers who deliver culturally safe, person-centred care.

Clinical education is central to the program, delivered through a distributed network of teaching clinics and community partnerships across Western Australia, including rural, remote and Aboriginal community-controlled health services.

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and motivated optometrist to join our academic team, contributing to high-quality teaching, clinical supervision, and community engagement.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver clinical teaching and provide hands-on supervision, supporting students to develop strong clinical, diagnostic and communication skills.
  • Contribute to community-based education, including outreach clinics and placements within Aboriginal community-controlled health services, promoting culturally safe and responsive care.
  • Support curriculum delivery, unit coordination, student assessment and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues to enhance student learning through innovative teaching approaches, including digital and simulated learning environments.
  • Engage in practice-based research, contributing to scholarship in areas such as clinical education, rural workforce development and equitable models of care.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organisations, healthcare providers and professional bodies to strengthen clinical education and service delivery.

This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on health equity, support Indigenous health outcomes, and contribute to innovative, community-focused optometry education across Western Australia.

You will bring a combination of clinical expertise, teaching capability and a strong commitment to culturally safe practice.

  • A degree in optometry with eligibility for registration and therapeutic endorsement with the Optometry Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience and/or university teaching experience, with the ability to support student learning and supervise in clinical settings.
  • Evidence of research capability (e.g. publications or practice-based scholarship), or a strong interest in clinically applied research.
  • Proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including community organisations and clinical partners.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes.
