- Full-time (1 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis for 18 months.
- Base salary range: Level A step 8, $116,866 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.
The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a high-profile joint venture between The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Curtin University, supported by the Western Australian Government. ICRAR is one of Australia’s largest astronomy institutions and a leading participant in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. The Centre has secured further funding through to 2030, supporting ambitious research programs across astronomy, engineering and advanced technologies.
The Astrophotonics Program brings together researchers from astronomy, physics and engineering to develop and deploy advanced photonic technologies. The team’s expertise includes highly stabilised timing and communication systems, transmitted via optical fibre networks and free-space laser links, with applications ranging from radio astronomy and space science to quantum technologies and national security.
Based at UWA’s picturesque Matilda Bay campus in Perth, you will join a collaborative and innovative research environment that supports flexible work arrangements and values work-life balance.
About the Role
~1 min read- Conduct research and development on atmospheric laser communication links and advanced photonic systems for terrestrial and space applications.
- Design, build and test experimental hardware, undertake atmospheric modelling and simulations, and analyse research data to evaluate system performance.
- Support laboratory activities, field trials and technology deployments in collaboration with academic, industry, government and defence partners.
- Publish high-quality research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Contribute to collaborative research projects, helping to generate impactful research outcomes and advance the objectives of the Astrophotonics Program.
- Support student research supervision and contribute to the collegial, governance and strategic activities of ICRAR and UWA.

- A PhD or close to completing a PHD in physics, astronomy, engineering, photonics, optics, telecommunications or a closely related discipline, with a demonstrated track record of research publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience conducting experimental and/or computational research in a relevant scientific or engineering field, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge or experience in areas such as free-space optical communications, laser systems, atmospheric propagation modelling, photonics or optical engineering.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and build productive relationships with academic, industry and government collaborators.
- A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with the ability to contribute positively to student supervision, team activities and the broader research community.
