About the role
You'll lead the team that owns our cloud infrastructure and the backend services running on it. This is a hands-on leadership role: roughly [60/40] split between managing people and staying close to the architecture. You'll be accountable for how our microservices are designed, deployed, scaled, and kept alive in production.

What you'll do
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend and infrastructure engineers, including 1:1s, goal setting, performance reviews, and career development
- Own the architecture of our AWS environment and the microservices platform running on it, from design through rollout
- Break down large initiatives into workstreams, delegate ownership, and hold the team to delivery commitments without micromanaging
- Run agile ceremonies (sprint planning, retros, backlog grooming) and work with product and other engineering leads on roadmap and prioritization
- Set and enforce engineering standards: code review culture, testing, observability, incident response, on-call rotation
- Drive cost, performance, and reliability improvements across the platform
- Participate in hiring: interviewing, calibration, onboarding
- 8+ years of industry experience
- 5+ years in a people-management or team-lead role, with a track record of leading engineering teams through full delivery cycles.
- 3+ years of production backend development in TypeScript / Node.js. Server-side work: APIs, services, background processing, data flows. Frontend or full-stack-leaning-frontend experience does not substitute for this.
- Proven experience designing and leading AWS solutions at scale, specifically for distributed microservices architectures. You should be able to walk us through a system you architected end to end and defend the trade-offs.
- Deep hands-on knowledge of core AWS services: [ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS/EventBridge, API Gateway, VPC networking, IAM]
- Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes or ECS)
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipeline ownership
- Strong grounding in agile methodologies and the judgment to know when to bend them
- Experience owning production systems: monitoring, alerting, on-call, post-incident reviews
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Experience with Kafka / event-driven architecture at scale
- Multi-region or multi-account AWS setups
- Database performance tuning at scale (Postgres, DynamoDB)
- Security and compliance exposure (SOC 2, ISO 27001)
