The Vehicle Technician Apprentice will receive training for performing preventative maintenance, detailed inspections, and repairs on the fleet. Training will be an individualized education program centered around performance and development, focusing, on ensuring that our trucks are safe on the road.
Responsibilities of Position:
- Train with an experienced technician to learn to perform repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies
- Complete training to learn to successfully perform tire maintenance
- Complete training to learn to perform detailed inspections, lubricate, and service vehicles and equipment as part of preventative maintenance
- Complete training to learn to check, fill, and/or change appropriate fluids for all vehicle parts and check/change filters
- Complete training to learn to perform detailed inspections on vehicle support systems, such as electrical, air, and brake systems
- Train with an experienced technician to learn to identify and perform repairs and adjustments to various components and operating systems on the vehicles, equipment, or related components
- Complete training to be able to ensure all safety devices on vehicles are in good working order
- Assist senior/experienced technicians with repairs, maintenance assignments, and adjustments
- Perform routine housekeeping duties related to tools, materials, shop, and work areas
- Professionally interact with internal, and external customers, and coworkers
- Engage in periodic assessments and meet the required metrics per individualized training program
- Assist in other areas of the vehicle maintenance shop as needed
- Maintain accurate records (time, repair orders, and parts usage) on the computer
- Travel within the region for training purposes as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position will not manage employees
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
- Ability to learn and apply new technical procedures through hands-on instruction and mentorship
- Mechanical aptitude with an interest in vehicle maintenance and repair
- Ability to safely drive vehicles in and out of service area
- Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal, and external customers, and coworkers
- Flexibility to work within various environments found within a vehicle maintenance shop and receive hands-on training from various technicians
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with email, Microsoft Office, etc.
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
- General knowledge of truck components and systems is preferred
- Must be able to pass the MAP (Maintenance Apprentice Program) within 1 year
- Must be able to obtain TIA certification if needed
Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
- Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 20 lbs
- Occasionally lifting/carrying a max of 75 lbs; rarely up to 100 lbs
- Frequently pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs; rarely up to 100 lbs
- Continuously working inside; frequently working outside
- Continuously working in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
- Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
- Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
- Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
- Continuously standing/walking; rarely sitting
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
- Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste
- Ability to travel between offices, as required
- Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
- Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
