Job Purpose
The Electrical Assistant supports qualified electricians and electrical supervisors by assisting with electrical maintenance, inspections, installations, and housekeeping activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical systems within the zinc mining operation.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health & Compliance
- Work in accordance with Mine Health and Safety legislation, mine standards, and electrical procedures.
- Follow all instructions related to lock‑out/tag‑out, isolations, and permits to work.
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, defects, and hazards.
- Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety meetings.
Electrical Maintenance Support
Assist electricians with:
- Planned and breakdown electrical maintenance
- Installation and removal of electrical equipment
- Cable pulling, termination preparation, and tagging
- Support maintenance on:
- Motors and motor control equipment
- Lighting and small power installations
- Field cabling and electrical accessories
- Carry tools, materials, and spares to work areas as required.
Housekeeping & Plant Standards
- Maintain clean and orderly electrical work areas, substations, and MCC rooms.
- Ensure tools and electrical equipment are correctly stored and maintained.
- Assist with cleaning of motors, panels, and electrical cabinets as instructed.
Operational Support (Shift-Based)
- Provide assistance during breakdowns to minimise production downtime.
- Support electrical activities during shutdowns and maintenance windows.
- Perform duties as directed to support production and maintenance priorities.
Learning & Development
- Assist artisans and technicians to gain practical on‑the‑job experience.
- Attend training, induction sessions, and development programmes.
- Work towards increased competency and potential trade qualification (where applicable).
Administration & Reporting
- Assist with completion of basic job cards and checklists.
- Report faults, defects, and abnormal conditions to supervisors.
- Record spares and materials usage when required.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 10–12 or equivalent
- Basic knowledge of electrical safety principles
- Ability to follow instructions and safe work procedures
- Medically fit for mine work
Advantageous
- Electrical assistant or pre‑apprenticeship training
- Basic electrical hand tools experience
- Previous mining or industrial exposure
Experience Requirements
- 2 years experience in an industrial or mining environment preferred
- Exposure to maintenance or technical work is advantageous
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Basic electrical tools and equipment handling
- Understanding of workplace safety rules
- Ability to identify basic electrical components
