The Opportunity

As the Leader, Public Affairs, you will be our on-the-ground expert, building and maintaining relationships with key policymakers and officials to advance our advocacy goals. Reporting to the Senior Advisor for Public Affairs, you will lead the day-to-day execution of our government relations strategies at the state level in Florida and other targeted states, and also contribute to our efforts at the federal level.

This role is for someone who thrives on direct engagement and strategic problem-solving. You will have a direct impact on our ability to create excellent educational opportunities for children.

You are a seasoned public affairs professional with a proven track record of leading successful advocacy campaigns. You have a deep understanding of education policy and are skilled at navigating complex political landscapes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Portfolio Management: Own the Florida and targeted states portfolio and manage the outside lobbyists who support it.  Set strategic direction with the Senior Advisor and carry full responsibility for execution.  

  • Lead Policy Engagement: Directly engage with key policymakers and their staff in Florida and targeted states, including the offices of chief executives, departments of education, state boards of education, and legislative bodies.

  • Advocate for our Mission: Actively advocate for policies that support high-performing charter schools, including those related to Schools of Hope, performance-based funding, facilities access, accountability, and graduate education.

  • Build Relationships: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with officials and key advocacy organizations at the state level.

  • Influence Federal Policy: Engage with federal policymakers and their staff on issues impacting our schools, such as ESSER and CSP funding, and the High-Quality Charter Schools Act.

  • Provide Strategic Counsel: Offer expert advice and help develop effective government relations strategies that achieve our objectives.

  • Cross-State Collaboration: Support policy initiatives in targeted states like Texas as needed, helping to expand our impact beyond Florida.

Skills

  • Experienced Leader: You have significant experience leading and managing successful policy advocacy initiatives and have a track record of achieving results with and through external partners, including lobbyists.

  • Policy Expert: You have a strong familiarity with education policy and the legislative and regulatory issues that impact high-performing charter schools.

  • Master Networker: You excel at building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels and have an existing network of contacts.

  • Strategic Thinker: You can analyze complex policy issues and develop effective strategies to influence outcomes.
