About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Community Engagement, the African and Caribbean HIV Prevention
Strategy Worker will support ACCHO HIV strategy work on a local level. They will focus on
reducing incidents of HIV among African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities Ontario,
improving quality of life for people living with and impacted by HIV, and implementing the Ontario
HIV Strategy for ACB communities. The Worker will work in partnership with the
Anonymous HIV Testing Outreach Worker.
This work will include providing education, health teaching, supportive referrals, advocacy, and
outreach to priority populations disproportionately impacted by HIV and to people living with HIV.
The Worker will support the work of the ACCHO secretariat on behalf of SWCHC. The Worker
will also perform anonymous HIV testing (targeted towards clients in priority populations) with
support from the anonymous HIV testing outreach worker.
Please note: Priority populations impacted by HIV in Ontario include African, Caribbean, and
Black communities, Indigenous communities, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with
men (including trans men), people who use drugs, and women impacted by structural risk factors
increasing their risk of HIV exposure. Other at-risk populations include people who are or have
been incarcerated, sex workers, homeless people, and trans and gender-diverse communities.

What We’re Looking For
Education
• Undergraduate degree in health or social science OR equivalent combination of
education and professional or lived/living experience.
Professional experience
• 5 years of experience working in the field of HIV/AIDS
• Experience in supervising volunteers
Required Language
• English mandatory
• French a strong asset
• Other languages an asset
Additional assets
A valid Ontario driver’s license is an asset.
Key competencies
• Experience working with African, Caribbean and Black communities
• Peer counselling and community development experience
• Strong knowledge of adult education, health promotion and harm reduction
• Experience working with people living with HIV
• Excellent collaboration skills to work with staff, volunteers, community partners and local
contacts
• Strong workshop facilitation skills
• Strong research skills to support resource development
• Self-directed and able to take initiative
• Excellent writing skills to prepare reports and proposals
• Excellent presentation skills
• Strong organizational skills including documentation, data collection and analysis, and
monthly reporting
• Ability to work very independently. Self -started and self-directed with strong judgement
and decision-making skills.
• Thorough understanding of the social determinants of health
• Understanding of how systems of oppression affect each priority population in unique
and distinct ways, commitment to continued learning
• Ability to build and maintain partnerships (primarily with local health and social services
organizations)
• Willingness to perform rapid and anonymous HIV testing (under a medical directive,
training provided)
• Commitment to a working with a harm reduction approach and passion for programming
for people living with HIV and communities impacted by HIV
• Commitment to continued learning on the impacts of colonialism in this work and
decolonization
• Commitment to the principles of health equity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression.
• Current standard first aid (level C) certification or willingness to certify (training provided)

Your Day-to-Day at a Glance
As our African, Caribbean and Black HIV Prevention Strategy Worker your responsibilities are:
Liaises and networks with external agencies
• Fosters and maintains active affiliations with agencies providing services to people living
with or impacted by HIV
• Participates in local community-based research projects (i.e. Sex Now, service provider
focus groups)
Provides health education
• Promotes awareness of HIV prevention and care services to priority populations within
the City of Ottawa, focusing on outreach and education within ACB communities
• Facilitate training and capacity building around HIV, low-barrier HIV testing, and HIV prevention and care in the community
Recruits and trains volunteers and students
• Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers
• Trains and supervises placement students when required
General Administration
• Co-ordinates the collection of data for the program and provides written reports to
manager and funders as needed
• Develops work plans as needed
• Implements the use of evaluation tools
Program Development
• Provides input to manager on program development by facilitating dialogue to identify
needs of client groups and community partners
• Works with the Anonymous HIV Testing Outreach Worker to promote HIV testing and
increase access to HIV testing, prevention, and care in ACB communities
Lived Experience
• This is a designated position for people who are African, Caribbean, and Black
• The Worker will contribute to operationalizing the organization’s anti-racism and anti-oppression
policy in their work and program.
Schedule
• This position is based at our 55 Eccles St. site with travel throughout the region,
regularly doing outreach throughout the Ottawa area.
• Regular weekday 8-hr shifts. Flexibility with some evening and weekend work required.
• Submits records of time worked and time off in a timely manner,
• Maintains and develops professional competence, and where applicable, a professional
license to practice, appropriate continuing education methods (e.g., peer interaction,
literature review, conferences, courses, staff development leave, etc.),
• Complies and adheres to all applicable Centre policies and procedures,
• Develops personal work plan in consultation with the Manager of Community
Engagement
